I was writing
Whitemunin's fic (or attempting to) when I came up with this one... But I've decided that I'm going to do a different one for her.
I'm posting it for posterity... and because some of you wives out there might be able to tell me whether this will strike any chords should I choose to use it sometime... ;)

Salt. It was her life's blood. She lived it, breathed it. Salt tainted her every waking hour for the last month. It lingered on her tongue, souring everything it touched. Lacing even the sweetest of flavors and making them burn on the way down.
He had come home, tucked his arms around her and whispered into her ear, just as he had almost every evening upon returning from work: “Hello Darling, did you miss me?” accompanied by a soft kiss below her earlobe. A simple ritual; it was sometimes accompanied by the rough scratch of beard when he had forgotten to shave, or a smooth rub of skin when he had remembered, and even more often, it was a quick warmth as he playfully nipped along her neck.
A sob tore out of her. She was surprised, she hadn't thought that she had anything left to vocalize her overwhelming agony. The tears had been her only outlet for days now. Tears that dried only to dampen her face once more shortly after. Her friends were worried for her. They had called, trying to share in the grief, trying to help her... She took the phone off of the hook. She had ignored the familiar, and locked herself in the past.
Couldn't they understand that she had nothing left to rebuild with? He had taken her out of the dark and given her the warmth and light of his smiles. He had gifted her with his eternal humor, and he had branded her with his love.
He had been her sun. And now she was facing an eclipse, and the light of her world was slowly draining away. Was she desperate enough to follow him beyond that elusive veil once the darkness overwhelmed her? She didn't know. She didn't know anything anymore.
And the bitter taste of salt lingered on her lips and tongue.
And the tears fell until there was nothing left to do but wait for more to come.
Salt was her lifeblood.
