the psychology of words

have i ever mentioned that i think nytimes is really awesome?

All right, I should start using better English, and actually mind my punctuation. I felt quite distressed today, while doing the recording for today's lunchtime talk. I haven't heard anyone speak eloquent English - not merely good English - in three years (in Canada too. Most of them had a lot of high school mannerisms. Granted, my English class was better, but it was in the grammatical sense of things - not flair). He had breadth in his vocabulary, and even his moments of hesitations were quite elegant. It seems like such a bygone era. Somehow, reading alone cannot make up for the void.

If you've noticed how often I use parentheses and dashes, you'll realize how often I tend to digress. I feel both amused and a trifle ashamed whenever I spot the same habit in speakers.

anglais, articles, ramble
