i am currently drinking a Goose Island Oatmeal Stout, and it has become my favorite stout. Black Butte Porter is still tops in the slightly-less-dark category, but for those of you (
ourika), who enjoy stout, please please give yourself a little $8 per 6-pack treat and find this magnificent beer. also, the bottle is damn cool, which, admittedly, is why i bought it in the first place. but now i'm sold, even with my fear of geese. :)
thanksgiving was fantastic- one of the best on record in my memory. i spent 7 straight hours in the kitchen, but it was well-worth it. the food was amazing and we were all happy with the results (welllll, i was a little bummed about the whole spices thing, but no one else minded). everyone agreed they didn't miss the traditional foods one bit. i had promised them ahead of time that if anyone did miss the usual fare, i'd make it this weekend, but no one did.
aside from the cooking (which would have been more tolerable to my feet had i not been wearing my genie shoes for many of those hours - how do Indian womyn do it??), there was much merrymaking. SBR broke out her tar, a persian, sorta guitar-like instrument:
while S & B played various drums and the shakey-egg and every now and then i pinged on a beer bottle with a nearby wrench. :) (much as i love to drum and sing and mess around, i am far too self-conscious to do any of it in front of anyone but SBR.) but it was fun to watch and experience the music from under a blanket, amidst the christmas lights we have in the livingroom (for light, not for xmas) and candle-light, with insence burning... i had thrown a bunch of middle-eastern printed skirts and saris and fabric around, and we had persian music on the stereo when the girls weren't playing music themselves. after we ate, we played some poker, at during the day the girls played hack while i cooked, and threw the (nerf) football around inside the house (it was raining outside). SBR had done a masterful job of cleaning the house while i was cooking, before the girls arrived and after a dinner we ate sitting on the floor, we smoked peach tobacco from the shisha, a sorta hookah-like pleasure smoking device:
gloria came by around 9:30pm and we hung out until about 1am, then crashed. it was a really great day, and, i am happy to report, there are STILL leftovers. :) considering that i spent about $60 on all the ingredients, and the meal i prepared fed 5 people 3-5 times now, i'd say it was a damn good bargain.
i love holidays that don't suck.
