First of May is
International Labour Day - a public holiday when we don’t have to work since communist times and no one will take it from us even though only leftie goes to march in pochód anymore. Especially since skinheads come to throw stuff and scream obscenities at the parade. I used to love them as a kid mostly because we got stuff - hats, paper flags and flowers. Now it’s all about ideology - no fun.
Third of May is also public holiday ever since the fall of communism - this is us commemorating adoption of
Constitution of May 3 in 1791 - Europe's first and the world's second modern codified national constitution. Celebrating this day was forbidden during communist times and now we have a lot of state celebrations. They try to make up for lost time.
Of course only people there are the ones that couldn’t go somewhere more interesting. Two public holidays two days apart - it just begs to take day of on May 2 and go countryside. Or few more days and go for a vacation. Especially since beginning of May often has pretty good weather.
How many people, do you think, go to work on 2nd of May? Right. Only those who really have to. So recently they made May 2 a
Flag Day. It’s not public holiday but many institutions make it a day off anyway.
There’s a holiday for everyone.
We call it
The Long Weekend (= holidays + weekend).
This year it was only four days of (+Sunday) but sometimes it can be whole 9 days with 1st on Tuesday and 3rd on Thursday (+30th of April and 4th of May taken off of work).
Unfortunately next year we’ll be worst case scenario - only 3 days log.
I’ve spent it mostly cleaning our summer house - our bathroom is being remade - it’s much better now. The weather was also best before - few last days of April were very warm and sunny. Then came May with storms. It rained on Friday and today. Yesterday was however beautiful and we had our first outdoor party - my cousin’s birthday.
And the Spring is so beautiful this year I almost forget how bad it is for my health. But it’s hard to forget you can’t breathe.
