I'm sorry this is very, very long but I didn't write anything after other episodes and I have feels.

I enjoyed the whole line-up of Syfy's Fridays this summer but my favourite turned out to be Dark Matter. Yes, it was cheesy and cheap - the same factory with different lightning woks as almost any place (yellow for mining colony, blue for zombie ship, red for the mob boss lair etc.) and I roll my eyes every time I see those pipes. Yes, the characters are basically archetypes and then they call each other by numbers. And some of the origin stories are straight on tropes but as they always say on tvtropes - it's the execution that matters.

And for some reason the execution on this turned out to be very entertaining to me. I love the crew and I love their dynamic. The mind wipe that allows them to examine what kind of people they really are and who they want to be. If they want to hang out to those forgotten lives (Four and Six sure try) or would they rather cut them off and be new people (Two insisting to be only called Two as the other name belonged to a different person). The way they start as strangers who can barely stand each other, can’t trust each other and never agree on anything to an actual team that saves each other’s asses and even likes each other most of the time. And then of course everything falls apart as all the insecurities and secrets tear them apart.

Two is my favourite. I can’t fully put in words how much I love Two - she is everything I love. The angst about her origins and the way she takes over the leadership. I love Five who is both most innocent and doesn’t let other reduce her to that. And One and Three whole hate friendship. Four pretending not to care and Six trying to take care of everyone (in many meanings). And of course Android in all her defectiveness. So let me just scream “NOOOO!” after that finale.

And there’s space (interstellar) travel which is almost completely absent from TV (even Killjoys - the other Syfy’s space show - only happens in one star system) and here is something I missed since Farscape - travelling to new places (even if they are mostly the same factory) and trying to survive in the Galaxy where everyone is trying to kill them and they often don’t even know why. And they also have the worst luck - especially on corporation jobs - whatever they touch blows up in their faces (often literally). And they damned if they refuse the job and damned if they take it. After a planet blows up after they visit it I can see how people can think they are seven-foot tall half-human half-reptile aliens with skin that burns and no one has ever survived encountering them.

[Spoilers for the whole Dark Matter series]
As I mentioned I loved the main theme - the way they tried to decide whether they are the same people who they used to be - destined to be the bad guys - or if they can change - and make up for their mistakes. In the heist episode the bad guys are exactly what all those warrants said Raza crew was (kidnapping, piracy, theft etc. - all on they did). And in some ways Raza crew is still like that - Four killed his mentor on spot for not switching sides and Six just bombed a base full of people for revenge and Three generally thinks killing people is solution to everything and Two spaced a guy even though she promised not to and killed bunch of, admittedly evil, scientists. They are not good but they all had reasons and they saved that mining colony and didn’t let zombie ship to go infecting people and keep saving each other. Well, at least until Six betrays them all.

We see the difference between who they are and who they used to be (or at least who everyone thinks they were - remember half-reptile alien mercenaries). Like Six says - maybe Two was right and they changed. The glimpses of Portia Lin (Two before the mindwipe) seemed much less bothered by killing and much less caring (but on the other hand she remembered what she was and what was done to her). Or maybe not - since she stills leaves a trail of bodies behind. But she wants to believe in that possibility of change. Four on other hand doesn’t care - he wants to be who he was and doesn’t care about leaving a trail of bodies behind. He kills anyone standing on his way and plans to do it all the way to the throne. One doesn’t believe Three can change but eventually gives up on the revenge. I like that there isn’t a simple answer to that question.

So what does Six betrayal mean? Was he secretly working for Galactic Authority all along? We now know it was Five who mind wiped them all and she did this because Portia and Ryo (Four) wanted to kill someone on the crew. I first thought One (they learnt he wasn’t really Jace Corso) but now I think they planned to kill Griffin Jones (Six) because they learnt he was working undercover for GA. And Five saved him because he saved her from that airlock and advocated for her to become part of the crew. I think he was undercover in the rebel base and then was duped to destroy that space station (he killed his “friends” because none of them was really his friends - they were criminals he was infiltrating) and that was spectacular fail. And after that infiltrating Raza - he was given that mission to rehabilitate himself. The only question is how did he knew?

And what will GA do with Raza crew?

My general thoughts about what we know about the crew of Raza so far:

[Massive Spoilers]
1 - One always seemed to be from a different story than the rest of the crew but now it makes perfect sense. He never seemed to fit with the rest of the crew. They all have useful skills and a level of pragmatism (even Five who isn’t a hardened criminal - just a street thief) while he seems to live in a kind of weird fairytale world where he passes judgement on everyone for not being up to his standards (force everyone to help the miners even if it kills you all along with them) and then does something stupid and selfish himself (the whole Wendy thing).

One always felt weird - he was this weird character who seemed like the worst ever version of the “emotional core” character that a lot of shows give to viewers - especially when the other characters are more the anti-hero type. Only in other shows characters like that are almost always right with their choices but One always seems to be the butt of the joke and fails and has to be rescued by someone with more sense. He’s also so standard (for the lack of better word) - no worm meat, not a couple with Four (even pretend) but trying to be cute with Two (hugging) - it’s almost to the point of ridiculousness. Even when I didn’t really like One I really like that - I like how the story defies expectations like that (I also like it that he is male as this role is usually given to female characters). He acts like his head is full of all those romantic and chivalry tropes that seem so out of touch with how everyone operates and most of the time it makes him land on his face. I especially like when Two does it when he tries the romance tropes on her (I was afraid they’ll go for the romance plot after last week but Two was all business as usual - no surprise hugs, go where I tell you to go as always). I feel bad for the actor as this is an ungrateful role to be the most useless and annoying character on the show but I enjoy watching his misfortunes (especially when he gets hit).

It makes perfect sense he is this rich boy who decided to go on revenge trip out of grief (watched too many movies and confused them with real life I’m sure) and pose as a real criminal despite having no idea what he was doing both before the memory both before and after memory loss. It’s also funny that he’s so anti-corporations now as One as Derrick Moss was one owning one. But he also grows - I was sure he was going to do something stupid - like try that revenge thing on Three even when he doesn’t know if Three really did it and neither of them remembers any of it anyway - but he decided to leave that behind him.

They say One has too much too loose - after all he’s not Corso, doesn’t have a warrant on his head and authorities would let him go - but they don’t know how much he has too loose. His owns a corporation - he could change his face back and go back to his luxury life. Instead he just wants to be part of the crew. It might not be that smart but as he started to push for crew integrity and them sticking together and learning to stand by Two and he grew on me.

2 - I love Two but when she gave that talk about keeping secrets all I could think was “hypocrite”. How about telling everyone about your superhealing abilities? Why even hide it? What horrible thing would happen if they know? I was so glad Android called her on that. But of course that secret became very useful. She came back from being spaced and saved everyone (and Five saved her). She was always the most badass of them all. She took leadership and no one questioned it because she is so good at it. And she could kick all their asses.
She was always the most mysterious of the crew - there were no memories of hers seen by Five and, unlike all the others, she’s not interested in learning anything about her previous life. She is the one who is most insistent on being called by her number and doesn’t want to even acknowledge her former identity. I kind of get that - memory loss is like dying - if you can’t remember the person you used to be that person is gone and you are someone else. But we also learn that’s because she was much younger than any of them. Manufactured to be perfect biological organism with nanites that fix and defend her (heal wounds, defeat illnesses, give her ability to survive in outer space). She was made to be faster, stronger and then used for something. And she didn’t like it - Rachel escaped her creators, killing most of them on her way out, and became Portia Lin - a pirate. And after meeting them you can’t help to be on her side. They treated her like object they have the right to use and abuse. She took what they gave her and thought her way to being her own person. And the crew of Raza certainly doesn’t think Alex and his people have any right to her. One more proof they are better people than many others.

I also love how she believes they will come back to rescue her but she doesn’t wait to be rescued - she escapes herself once and then second time when her powers are back due to that rescue. And the guys believe in her being able to do that herself (and brag about it). They were just there to help a little bit (Android and Two herself did all the work).

After all she already did one impossible thing and saved every one of them. In one of the best moments of the series when the men of Raza were suffocating in confinement and talking about saving the ship and getting the revenge for Two being spaced and how Five is innocent and helpless and at the same time the women of Raza save the ship with Two taking out bunch of guys and Five kills a guy to save Two (I also liked when the other guys turned this on One - lay down and hide while we fight you poor useless innocent and, as we can see on the photo, he did - despite all the protestations lack of oxygen made sure of that).

But who is this old guy and what he was planning to do with Two? And that other one like her?

3 - So I’m pretty sure we now know the farm boy memory belonged to Three (One, as an heir to a fortune rather didn’t grow up on a farm). This explains why he got so easily into life with Sarah on her farm. I also wonder if the people who shot him - before Sarah found him - could’ve been bounty hunters sent by Derrick Moss (they failed so he decided to take the matter into his own hands as fake Jace Corso).

It’s funny how he’s probably the most like his old self - not nearly as evil as he likes to pretend to be. It’s a pretty good pretence (or at least One believes in it) but when push comes to shove he tries to save everyone. He cries reading Charlotte’s Web. He tried to save Sarah - both as Marcus Boone and Three. He was the one who spilled the password to the vault when Two’s life was in danger. He pretends he doesn’t care but he does. Especially for Two even though he would never admit it.

4 - Four is a prince but he had abusive father and evil stepmother and he had to kill his way out of the palace. Whatever cushion from real life he had it was long gone before he joined Raza crew. In theory he comes from a background as privileged as One but where Ones is all useless and unrealistic Four is all pragmatic and practical - from discount and bribe at clone station to quick thinking and telling the gang lady they want to hurt Six not help him. And he is the one who cares least about human lives (Three is all talk but Four just cuts the people in his way).

He is the one least interested in leaving their former lives behind. He plans to get his throne back even though he doesn’t remember being a prince and probably has no idea about ruling a nation. He just wants revenge and what he is owed. And now that he feels his brother also betrayed him he plans to cut his way all the way there.

5 - Five just wants them all to be friends. Family even. She used to have a whole group of other street kids to be with and now she tries to desperately make the connections with the crew. She bonds with Two but she also scares her a little. She bonds with Android but she is not best with human interaction. Three and Four are not very friendly and One is useless even for that but Six for the most part cares - pays attention to her, helps her and went to save her form the memories. She doesn’t want him to get hurt or in trouble. This is a relationship that stretches from before the memory loss. In fact she did it to help him. The little tech genius who put together a mind wipe in quick to save a friend.

She is treated as a kid (although they don’t know her age and Jodelle Ferland is almost 21 but it feels like she was the little kid in all those shows just a moment ago) and the other members - especially Six treat her like this innocent, fragile girl but she was street kid and a thief and she was less innocent that One even before she killed a man (or wiped everyone’s minds). She is badass and even Six admits it.

6 -Six always seemed as such a good person. Someone who has similar moral stance as One but without the obnoxiousness (and soapboxing). And then we see his memory about being a rebel and fighting against Galactic Authority that seems like an entity controlled by corporations and government one should stand up against. Only the rebels turn out to be at least as bad. The man leading them sets up Griffin Jones and his buddies to destroy space station with ten thousand people on board. I put my theory about the undercover work both in the Rebellion and on Raza crew above but he still must’ve felt duped and betrayed and guilty. Six doesn’t remember any of that - he just knows what he saw - being used and framed for mass murder and the person he is cannot let that pass. And he knows who did it. He knows who killed those thousands of people (innocents mostly) and Six is the kind of person who just couldn’t let it go unpunished. So he tries to kill the guy who set him up. Almost makes it.

I wonder when he started working for GA. As a Six I mean. Even if my theory is right - Six wouldn’t know he was undercover. Did he find some clue in his stuff? Was it another memory in Five’s head? Was it something in the base? Did they contact him somehow? Maybe they did and he didn’t believe them but then the planet blew up (he was against giving the thing to Mikkei but they outvoted him and when he said he tried to stop them from doing that he was asked if he really did try) and he realized Five wiped them (so not so innocent either even before all of this) and decided enough is enough and they must be stopped. Save the galaxy from the criminals like them and the destruction that follows them.

Android - It’s easy to forget she lost her memory too (during that reset) so she get surprised by herself too. She’s neither as emotionless nor as logical as she thinks. I was so happy that Five just straight told her that she was showing emotions last episode and Android was so confused by it (and tried to think about it as error in programming) it might be another thing she forgot (like why she was trying to kill the crew) when she was reset. This makes her feel uneasy but she learns to value this new state. Her diagnostic clone my call it a flaw but she has friends and the crew will defend her right to be who she becomes. They tell her they like her how she is and treat her more and more as member of the crew. Remember when Three wanted to leave her behind in space - in the end he is upset at thought of losing her personality. Five deletes the copy for even suggesting there is something wrong with her.

And if she isn’t incapacitated (constantly) she cares for them too. And saves them - the rescue of Two was pretty badass and then they go to blow up some things together. All part of family.

BTW It was really weird to see Roger Cross as Six in one moment and then as Travis in Continuum promos. He really is in everything (like he was in The Strain and his brother was played by Art from Orphan Black but he was also on Orphan Black and so on)
