I just watched the 12 Monkeys pilot and it was fun. When they announced this series it seemed like a horrible idea but they did pretty well at making it interesting.
[Spoiler (click to open)] There are a lot of changes of course. The dates for now and the future are obviously different. Cassandra is a virologist and the 12 Monkeys leader is a woman. The future people are much more likeable. But most of all everyone believes in the time travel.
In the movie not only Cole didn't really have a good way of proving he is time traveller to Cassandra but he almost stopped believing it himself (just crazy as everyone said). Here he disappears before her eyes in the first few minutes and the changes physiology that time travelling cause I actually detectable so Cassandra and Leland so they all believe. I wonder if the knowledge of this will lead to it being invented.
This allows action to get going from the start but I miss the crazy and uncertain Cole jumping all over time and space while not sure if it's not just his imagination. However, that would've been probably tiring in the long run and we all know that this is time travel show. No point of denying it. It was harder for me to suspend disbelief with Cassandra's super ability to run quietly in heels through office building or that Leland who was closest to the paradox explosion was the only one who survived it.
One of my favourite things about the movie was that it was a closed time loop. Everything that they did made the future happen exactly as it did - the plague and death and all. At the same time it also has a happy ending - Cole finishes his mission and saves the future. I was afraid that this will completely undo that (just like Terminator 2) as continuations tend to do that. I'm happy that they left it ambiguous. The ending suggest that the death of Leland Goines might be what will allow plague to happen. In this case I suspect Jones is really old Cassandra. She's like River Song. She already knows what must happen so she lies to get there. And get something that will allow them to get the cure to the future.
Of course neither we nor the (main) characters know how time travel works in this universe and I find it very intriguing.
I also like how it is a giant Nikita reunion (Xander Berkeley is coming for a guest appearance too). But most of all I like that Syfy is making sf again.
