So it got cold.
The big chill blew all the way here. Of course it isn't the real cold like up north with -30 or even -40 degrees plus (or rather minus) windchill. The temperatures that I can't quite comprehend (the record cold temperature for Warsaw is -30 oC and for Poland -42 (but that was almost a century ago)) but I know shouldn't happen outside Siberia or at least polar circles.I feel for everyone stuck in that kind of weather.
Here it was just -4 oC today and -12 last nigh (and tonight too). It felt colder (according to forecast about 6 to 8 degrees colder) but still it's not that bad. When I went home last Christmas it was -15 during the day and -25 during the night and I was spending hours outside. You just need to dress appropriately and it's not bad (some people here have no sense - I have one neighbour wearing shorts no matter the weather and I've seen people in shoes that were a little more then sandals).
However, my parents skyped to ask how cold I am because they know how bad the heating is in here and how draughty it is (neither the doors nor the windows fit perfectly). They called to ask about temperature inside. It was 17 this morning and 18 when I came back from work. I made it a little warmer with since then but it just leaks too much too get really warm inside. It's a little cold when you have to sit in it so I have UGGs on my feet and a warm fleece on me right now. The heating/AC system works much better at cooling that at heating her (makes sense there are many more very hot days here but still) and that's why my power bills in winter are much higher then in summer.
It confusing for all of us because in Poland (and generally northern Europe - my Swedish friend says her family back home is having the same problem) this has been a very warm winter so far. Since Xaver dumped snow and cold on them at the beginning of December there have hardly been any minus temperatures. For few past weeks even during the night it doesn't drop below zero and my friends post photos of blooming bushes and daisies and pansies. My dad says that if that keeps on the fruit trees can start flowering and then when the cold comes (and it will come eventually) it will be bad. So we all are worried by our unseasonable weather.
Mine will change tomorrow. It won't be as rapid change as yesterday when it dropped from +15 and rainy in the morning to cloudless and -4 in the evening but it will be getting steadily warmer this week - the forecast for Saturday says 21 oC. Just as my parents will go from around 10 to maybe 0 and some snow. So maybe we will all get the season we were supposed to. Or maybe it's just temporary and will get another swing soon (it's been going up/rainy and down/sunny a lot lately). If it does I want to order some snow next time. Screw all the panic around here - I want to build a snowman. I have gloves for it.
