so that was weird

Watched the Oscars tonight. It was odd--yes, let's go with odd because quite frankly, I'm not sure there's another word for it. Anne Hathoway was clearly trying to do right by her hosting duties and for the most part she was enjoyable and upbeat ("Mircophones get smaller!" and "Flub. Drink at home!" both made me snorfle unexpectedly) though there were hints of Trying Too Hard, which are completely understandable since y'know, it's the Oscars and people are going to be talking about it around watercoolers and such for the rest of the week or until more important things grab out attention.

That said, James Franco was just down right uncomfortable to watch. In his defense, it's midterm season, so y'know, no one's on top of their game (why no, I didn't accidently take a two hour nap after church when I was supposed to be reading this mechine woman article on the Cyborg--look I don't even know, she keeps air quoting women of color and dropping the word Marxism like it's going out of style--and I certainly didn't wake only because my brother was there to offer me food and to remind me the show was about to start, what?). That said, as a college student and an alumni of An Urban High School, can I just said Franco looked high as a kite? I was a little surprised the camera didn't cut to him backstage surrounded by smoke and digging into a bag of cheetos during the leading actor award.

Apparently everyone knew the King's Speech winning best film was a done deal after it won one of it's earlier awards--screenplay? I can't remember--but previous years have taught me to not expect anything from the Oscars except a headache (and while I'm happy TKS kinda stole the night, WTF Nolan not even getting NOMINATED for Best Director? Inception might not have been teh best movie ever but it was a well made movie, and Nolan and the editors played a big part of that so it was kinda crazy-making to see it not get nominated for either of those things, while it did get one for original screenplay, though arguably, the writing was the weakest part of the movie).

In conclusion: Yay Colin Firth. Still need to see the movie, but for now I celebrate by watching P&P while I try to read Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler.

movies, some crazy in your bowl of nuts, school, too much time on my hands
