Arisia is held in Boston every MLK weekend. This will be my first time back in awhile.
FRIDAY
Autograph Fri 5:00 PM
While the program lists this as a 90-minute slot, I can't see sitting for 90 minutes waiting for someone to ask for my autograph . . . so I'll probably leave by 5:45. If you miss me, don't be shy about stopping me in the hallway to ask me to sign; I don't mind, and if I'm in a tearing hurry, I'll tell you.
Interstitial Arts: A Discussion Fri 6:30 PM
This will be our
IAF "Town Meeting," attending by all the Boardies.* We want to hear what you think IAF should be doing this year . . . so please come. We're also doing an event that evening for IAF Working Group members, and people who are interested in getting more involved - if that's you, please Comment here or DM me.
SATURDAY
Character Dynamics Sat 11:00 AM
You have your cast of characters, now how do you get them to interact the way you want? How can you make you them fight, love, and laugh at each other convincingly? How do you make changes in a relationship between characters come about naturally, rather than seeming forced? Our panelists will elucidate on the finer points of getting your characters to behave with each other on the page the way you imagine them in your head.
Reading - Kushner, Longyear, Shawl Sat 12:30 PM
We each read for 25 minutes. I don't know yet what order we'll be in. Anything special you want to hear?
From First Draft to Second Draft Sat 5:00 PM
What's your writing process? Is the first draft a private letter to yourself while the second draft is more accessible to others? How does the fiction change through the writing and revision process? Our panelists discuss their methods for rewriting.
The Heroine's Journey Sat 8:00 PM
If one takes a classic hero's journey plot and changes the gender of the character, how does the story shift and change? Are there differences we can see in literature between stories told with women and girls as their protagonist, and the ones told about boys and men?
deliasherman 's on this one with me! Sorry I'm too lazy to type in the names of all the other panelists - but they're all great - can't wait!
Arisia's Preliminary Schedule is now posted, so you can see for yourself.
*I was a GoH at one of the first of Boston's
Arisia Conventions - it was one of my first GoH spots . . . they roasted me (bliss!) and I still have the cup with my name on it . . . ! I'm sorry I've missed so many since. It's the same weekend as my father's birthday (MLK Day weekend), and in general not a good month for me to travel. But I'm making up for it this year, as my fellow-Board Members of the
Interstitial Arts Foundation have deemed it a good weekend to fly/drive/train/bus in from all over the country, to hold our face-to-face Board Meeting on Sunday.
