Summer ramblings

In just a few days, I will be leaving for North Carolina for my sister's wedding. I'm excited and have been stuck on the Bach aria I'm going to be singing (never mind that the part I keep humming is the oboe part, not the soprano part).

My new Prius isn't going to be ready yet, so I'll be driving a loaner from the dealership, as promised, and they are "99% sure" it will be a Prius. I hope so, because I'm really looking forward to getting used to the setup and features, not to mention saving money on gas!

I've done some work on the lecture I will be giving at The Never-Ending Odyssey (TNEO) in late July, on the book The Seven Basic Plots by Christopher Booker. The book is not without its flaws. Being over 700 pages when he could have been more concise is one of them. But he's great at drawing big connections and grouping similar things together to analyze them. I hope that some of the lessons from the book will be useful to other Odfellows, as I know they have been for me.

Stephan and I had a wonderful visit yesterday to Turkey Run State Park, about an hour west of Indianapolis. With its sandstone gorges, old growth forests, and meandering waterfalls, it's one of my favorite local landscapes. You could drive nearby and see only flat cornfields, never guessing that a lot of the interesting geography in that part of the state is concave. We took a wonderfully rugged trail that had us climbing up small waterfalls and down ladders. I know there are more dramatic landscapes in other parts of the country, but it's hard for me to imagine anyone coming to this park and not being impressed. We had so much fun and came home much refreshed.

Tonight we celebrated Stephan's birthday at Ginza, a family tradition for many years now. As usual, I had scallops and ended up having to take about half of my meal home.
