Okay so last night, Lindsey, Nick, Danny, Alex, and I all went to see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland on IMAX 3D.
A few of you might know that I was pretty skeptical about this movie, but I thought in order to have a justified opinion of it I needed to see it. So I did. My opinion of it now is that it was a decently interesting film, but not OMG AMAZING, and there were a lot of things that left room for improvement...
So I will explain my thoughts now!
First of all I have to say that Colleen Atwood did a good job designing the costumes, but not a GREAT job. Alice's dresses were kind of half-assed I thought, and the only one I really liked was the red dress she wore when she was in the Red Queen's castle.
But this isn't talking about the costumes, just the film as a whole. I just felt the need to say that.
So to get down to it, I thought that this movie didn't really have the same nonsensical vibe as the book. Granted, I know this IS NOT a faithful representation of the book, but more like some weird kind of sequel. It had a very "Return to Oz" sort of storyline in which Alice doesn't really remember Wonderland (or as they call it in the movie, Underland, which was very WTF to me) and is 18 years old, expected to marry some boring loser, and winds up chasing the white rabbit and falling down the rabbit hole again.
That's fine, I can deal with another "Return to Oz" type thing, but that doesn't mean I WANT it.
Anyway, so she goes around and people argue whether or not she is THE Alice and nobody thinks she is, the Red Queen sends her (horribly CG rendered) lacky whose name I don't know. Is it Stain? Is it... I have no idea. Something with an S. Either way he's played by Crispin Glover and has a real person head and a CG body that looks aaaawful together.
Alice apparently is part of some prophecy where she kills the jabberwocky and restores the White Queen's reign. Okay. So. Now it's like "Return to Oz" meets "Lord of the Rings" meets "Magic Knight Rayearth."
I can deal with that.
Believe it or not I did LIKE this film, but there were a lot of things wrong with it I thought.
Moving on, let's address the Mad Hatter, aka: the character who was marketed to hell because he's played by Johnny Depp. Yeah, guess who's on the cover of the soundtrack? I'll give you a hint: it's not Alice.
Okay so the Hatter is this crazy dude who used to work for the White Queen and now he's just a guy who's bonkers. Ummmmm. Okay.
He can also do some kind of dance that was like "Flapperbackum dance" or something. I don't know. But he'll only do it when the White Queen reigns again blahblahblah.
At times he talked with a lisp and a British accent and then other times he was all rough and Scottish. Whatever, he's crazy. But it was still kind of... I dunno. I didn't dig it.
His dance scene at the end of the movie was definitely the worst part of the film. Why? Because it was super awkward, the music made noooo sense with the rest of the soundtrack, and the CG for it was really really bad.
On a whole the CG for this movie was terrible!!! In a few years from now, this movie will be Star Wars: Attack of the Clones all over again. It will not age well.
To keep from ranting on and on forever, let's sum things up here:
On a whole the movie was fun. I think it's an improvement compared to Burton's other more recent films, and the actors all did a good job except for Anne Hathaway's "I'm on acid" interpretation of the White Queen. The costumes were pretty, the music was good, but there were just things that I felt it was lacking as a sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
So there you have it.
And by the way, I saw a preview for TRON: Legacy.
OH MY GOD THAT MOVIE LOOKS EPIC AS HELL. *A*A*A*A*A*A*
