There is something about the cooling temperature of the fall and thanksgiving weekend that reminds me of The Smiths song, "Asleep". It brings me back to the first time I read The Perks of Being a Wallflower and for some reason it just seems to go with the comforting feeling of Thanksgiving. Don't ask me to explain it, it's a feeling that is embedded under my skin or something. It's just there and its there to stay.
This weekend I got to reconnect with that idea once again. I got the turkey AND the tunes. POP Montreal was an event I am sure everyone is close to sick of hearing about and reading about, so I will leave it at this... It is time to focus on the next big thing for those of you that may be fortunate enough to go. CMJ (a chart magazine's music festival/pannel/awards show/shmooze fest 2007) is taking over NYC from the 15-22. Not only will EVERY college music journalist from the city be there but Montreal's very own CJLO will be sending a herd of representives to check out what's new, who's amazing and maybe bring home a little college radio award or two.
This is the first year they have sent over a crowd this size repping the station and it is a substatial number at 20+ people. We will be taking over NYC one event at a time.
If anyone ever gets the chance to swing a ticket for the shows and the bus, its worth it to wander down for a few days with over two hundred bands showcasing all over the city. There is something about fall and New York and The Smiths that just make a girl want to settle down with some pie and watch the seasons a changin. It also means a fresh break between those sweaty venues we check out. Now there is a point in going outside and getting some fresh air, unlike the 30 degree days we were getting in the summer.
Turkey, tunes and more tunes to follow. This is my chance to keep ya'll updated on the what's what out and about your local scene and perhaps some other scenes you may not know too much about. Or maybe you don't care about em but at least now you will sound like an educated snob when you go to bash em.
PS: RIP Cobra Noir and Spitalfield. Cobra Noir was an AMAZING local band and I am very sad to see them go. Spitalfield... I am sad to see you go but even sadder to say that you are lived on my many other bands of similar style. You just happened to be the one I liked best.
