100 Things to Read #2

Apr 21, 2012 13:29

I know that as this thing goes on, I'm going to flag, so perhaps I should give in to my urge to post about ten a day right now...

#2 is from a fandom in which I'm still really a baby. February of last year, I read a few Merlin/Arthur fics at the prompting of a friend who has similar fanfic tastes. I liked them but didn't really go looking for much--it's so hard to find good fic without getting kind of involved. Something got me started again a few weeks ago, and at this point, I've actually watched almost all of season one of the show--I think I have two episodes left. I'll tell ya, it's almost impossible to remember that the show isn't actually slashy, because they sure as hell act like that's where they're going! I know I'm going to be really disappointed when one of them starts messing around with a girl =(

Anyway, I started a M/A rec list a few days ago, but instead of posting it (who knows when I ever would have), I'll throw my recs into these 100 Things and take care of it that way.

Author's Summary: Modern AU. For the last twenty two years Uther Pendragon has been waging war on magic. Now his son Arthur has been framed for a magical crime and sent to the prison for magic users. Arthur is instantly targeted by the inmates, but mysterious top dog Merlin takes him under his wing. They form a bond, and Merlin decides to help Arthur clear his name. (Warnings: non-con and dub-con, though it's brief and not M/A, violence, death of minor characters.)

This was so good. I don't know how it's not at the top of everyone's M/A rec list. Merlin is a total badass wizard but still his total awkward self. Arthur is in a wicked situation but still so Arthur. He just... arthurs all over the place. There's such a good balance of drama and amusing bits, and I thought the characterizations were all so good. I loved the story. And now that I've actually seen some of the show, I think the ways she used elements from season one were really smart. 125k probably seems long, but I easily could have read double that. So good (as I've said for the 100th time). Definitely a "reread multiple times in future" kind of story.
