This is just a reminder that trans and genderqueer folk are 10 times more likely to be killed then the rest of us (and by us, I mean the cis-gendered people who read this).
and also just to remember...
Kellie Telesford. Brian McGlothin. Gabriela Alejandra Albornoz. Patrick Murphy. Stacy Brown. Adolphus Simmons. Fedra. Sanesha Stewart. Lawrence King. Simmie Williams Jr. Luna. Lloyd Nixon. Felicia Melton-Smyth. Silvana Berisha. Ebony Whitaker. Rosa Pazos. Juan Carlos Aucalle Coronel. Angie Zapata. Jaylynn L. Namauu. Samantha Rangel Brandau. Nikki Williams. Ruby Molina. Aimee Wilcoxson. Duanna Johnson. Dilek Ince. Ali. And two other Iraqi transgender women.
And all the people who's names will never make lists like this.
All killed because of hate and ignorance.
& as pointed out on Feministing... most of this list is women of color.
Today, I am examining my cis-gendered privilege. Today, I am thinking about how to be a better ally and friend. Today, I am thinking about how fucking lucky I am to have friends all across the gender spectrum, who challenge the world and kick ass doing it. How much I love them, and how much better my community is because of them. Tonight, I'll hug my closest friends a little closer. And then, carry this day into everyday. Maybe you will, too?
