wild

I'm reading a book called Wild, by Cheryl Strayed. It's about a young woman who decides to hike the Pacific Crest Trail on her own. (The PCT is the West Coast version of the Appalachian Trail...it goes from the Mexican border to the top of Washington, and people really do hike the whole thing.)

The book by Bill Bryson about walking the Appalachian Trail, A Walk in the Woods, is one of my all time favorite books, so I thought this would be a slam dunk for me. It's way different, though. Bryson is hilarious, and I really connected with his love of just being in the woods. Wild, on the other hand, is a brutally honest portrayal of a woman's attempt to find herself after her mom dies and she does terrible, self-destructive things in the aftermath. Um, not really chock full of humor. I'm not done yet but it's definitely got me thinking. We'll see where it takes us.

Interesting fact: she chose the surname "strayed" for herself. Yes, very interesting.
