Barr, Timothy
1957-
Timothy Barr was born on January 23, 1957 in Harrisburg, PA. When he was still quite young, his mother, a gifted painter herself, introduced him to painting. Now, one of the world's most celebrated contemporary landscape painters, Timothy Barr continues the legacy of Luminism in a variation uniquely his own.
Barr's recognition of this legacy had its beginnings in 1978, when he attended Temple University's Tyler School of Art and dedicated himself to studying painting. By the late eighties, he began painting even more seriously, deciding to make his art his profession. He started to actively show his work in 1990, painting exclusively for Newman Galleries.
Now highly prolific, Barr has created more than three hundred paintings in the past decade alone. Known for his jewel-like landscape paintings of the Pennsylvania countryside, Martha's Vineyard, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and the British Virgin Islands, Barr paints with a heightened sense of the relationship between color and light, infusing natural images with a serene and meditative radiance. His technique involves the layering of thin glazes over the painted surface to endow the painting with an actual physical glow. Barr's paintings, in their use of light to create structure and composition, are powerful examples of Luminism, an art movement begun by the artists Frederic Church and Albert Bierstadt before him. Like Church and Bierstadt as well, Barr's paintings reflect the art of the Barbizon School.
