Rusty's Distraction

Title: Rusty's Distraction
Pairing: Sorry but it's more pre-Rusty/Linus

I got the idea for this piece from some the pictures xenasoul posted and one of the comments on them and just felt like writing it (hope that's not copy right)

Frank honestly didn’t understand how any two people could be so clueless. There was another week before the big game and if one of them didn’t do something soon he was beginning to feel like he’d have to interfere.

They were both being complete idiots.

Frank had known Rusty a long time, and he couldn’t ever remember placing him anywhere near an idiot category. He was always the one who knew what was going on, the one that never got distracted, till the kid showed up.

Of course Frank didn’t want to blame the kid. Linus was a nice guy, didn’t talk much, but he was smart, though Frank only noticed last night when he had over heard the kid talking his way out of going anywhere with the Malloy’s. But above all that the kid was innocent, and naïve, and definitely oblivious, especially to the way Rusty looked at him when he wasn’t looking.

Frank thought it was ridiculous; Rusty was acting like some scared teenager, though thankfully he had toned it down a bit and wasn’t quite as obvious. In fact Frank wasn’t even sure anyone else had picked up on it, including Rusty. Danny was bothered and angry about something that Frank couldn’t pin point, Reuben was still angry about his casino being blown up, Saul (as much as Frank hated to say it) seemed to have lost a little of what he had going for him, Frank wasn’t sure any of the other guys could read people for their lives, and Rusty was the one with the problem.

Not that Frank really thought it was a problem, it would be fine if Rus would do something, or if the kid would just wrap his head around the fact that he was doing this job so that he could have more energy too pick up on it.

Frank dealt another hand to the Texan in front of him still not paying any attention to his story of how he ended up there, since he’d asked for the transfer he’d heard more than his fair share of divorced or dumped stories.

Rusty and Linus had been wandering around watching Benedict all evening, now they were standing by the stairs just talking, but Frank could still see it. Rusty wouldn’t look at the kid, who just kept talking not even noticing that he was probably being ignored, until he turned around to look at something on the stairs.

There it was! That look again, and once again Frank had to wonder why Rusty wasn’t doing anything. Granted if he did he’d probably scare the kid, but that couldn’t be any worse then what he was doing now. Or many he was ignoring it ‘cause he should have known better. Linus was after all about ten years younger then him, and one of Rusty and Danny’s mentor’s kids to boot.

It took Frank a moment to notice that ‘the look’ didn’t last as long this time. The woman coming down the stairs had caught Rusty’s attention and he turned around to hide from her but looked very angry.

Frank didn’t know what was wrong, butt he was getting the feeling that pretty soon Rusty’s distraction was going to be one of the last on his list of worries. Glancing at the clock realised his shift ended in 20 minutes. He’d find out then.
