Twenty.

On the morning of November 16th, 1989, I woke up feeling nervous as hell. I boarded a train at 7 AM for a 1-hour 45-minute ride to a place I had only been to once before... a place I didn't think I'd ever feel comfortable at... to enter into a situation I felt totally unprepared for.

It was my first day working a permanent, full-time job. My first day in Civil Service.

I originally planned to only stay in Civil Service for a few years; I had had no luck landing a full-time job in the Private Sector, and thought that a few years of on-the-job experience would make me much more marketable.

About 2 years after I started working in Civil Service, I got a significant promotion. The new position paid so much better that I gave serious thought to making Civil Service my career. While I have occasionally put feelers out into the Private Sector, none of them ever panned out. And even with all the trouble I had a few years back, for the most part I've been happy doing what I do.

Twenty years.

I just can't quite wrap my head around it.
