Friday:
I drove to Athens, Alabama, to chaperone a Jr High Retreat for the boys and girls of Central Church of Christ. I got there and hung out with Chris up at the building in my former office for an hour or 2. Then I went to the Pittman's and lounged briefly, before going with Mother Donna to pick up the boys from school. After that, we went and hung out at the house, and I had my first home-cooked meal in over a month. Then we went to church and loaded up the bus and headed to Guntersville. When we got there, we played fruitbasket turnover and had snacks. Then we went to our first session at 0945, which was followed by gender separated small group discussion. Then, my boys got trounced by the girls with shaving cream. We then plotted a nocturnal mission to exact our revenge, but our plans were thwarted due to the fact that none of the boys brought pranking materials with them. Went to bed around 0200.
Saturday:
I woke up at 0740. I was tired. Got cleaned up and headed to breakfast by 0830. It was the first breakfast I'd had in a couple of weeks. Then had quiet time for 20 minutes, so I prayed. Then we had a morning session. After that, we had our small group meetings, this one was led by me. Then we goofed off playing football and basketball for an hour until lunch at 1215. At approximately 1300 we began our epic game of football, Old men (I was one of these) and girls against boys. Total domination ensued. Old men and girls win, 6-2. We then repicked teams and played for another hour or so. At 1430, we ended football and took a hydration timeout. Then everyone went and played around in canoes on Lake Guntersville, except for Jake. Jake slept on a porch swing overlooking the lake with a nice breeze about him from 1445 to 1650. I then woke up and continutued my nap in my cabin from 1700 to 1730. I then went to supper. After supper we had another session, followed by small group meetings. Promptly, at 2000 hours, Capture the Flag began, boys against girls, the idea being the girls. In spite of their best efforts (cheating), the girls every attempt to obtain our flag was denied, whereas the boys were able to overwhelm the female defense on several occasions. I crawled 200 yards through thick grass on my belly towards the enemy flag, only to have my teammate swoop in and grab it when I was 20 yards away and still undetected by any player. After that, we ate pizza and hung out for a few minutes. Then the girls informed us that we would be attacked with another barrage of shaving cream, to which I replied, "Why did you tell us, and take away the element of surprise?" My men gathered in our cabin around 2200 hours to discuss our plans of action. I was appointed "General" and set about plotting our victory. I sent 2 spies to steal cans of shaving cream, since we were weaponless, and the fighting began once they returned with ammo. Everything was white. I stood near the back mostly, directing my troops, until a few girls decided to chase me. I successfully eluded the girls, but not the two malicious trees who came out of no where to bring me to a very sudden stop. My ribs and knee will be fine, but are in the process of recovery. The fighting lasted until 2330, at which point everyone was sent back to cabins and lights were out by 0115.
Sunday:
I woke up at 0730, tired and now sore. I made it to breakfast by 0800, and enjoyed my quiet time on the aforementioned porch swing from 0850 til 0915. Then we had our last session with communion, and clean up began at 1100 hours. I commanded the assault on the cabin, the weapon of choice being the broom. My legions overwhelmed the minions of dirt and pine straw and we were victorious by 1130. We had the bus loaded by 1230 and left at 0100. By 0200, my hair had been braided by 4 Jr High girls. After arriving at church, the bus was unloaded by 0230 and I lounged at the Pittman's from 0245 until 0330. At 0330, I had 3-4 inches of hair cut off, and I departed Athens by 0430 due to the impending tornadoes and hurricane Rita leftovers. I arrived back at school at approximately 0630, and proceeded to waste the rest of the day.
