Sarah Slean Dec. 16th

So we begin the day with my managing to wake up at 4:30am and somehow not being able to sleep anymore. This gave me a grand total of 3 1/2 hours of sleep for the night so how I lasted the day/evening is a little beyond me, but it worked out just fine in the end :)

I was up early emailed people, wrote my review for yesterday etc etc and then went out for a new silver sharpie. I ended up doing a quick stop for tissue paper as well :) Made the trek a little more worthwhile.... and then I got back around 12 and we went to work on the Passioneer Holiday Project Card. For anyone who missed it check out this link on the message board for an explanation. In short it's our Chirstmas present to Sarah for all that she gives to us all year, we have people go out, pay forward the great feeling we get from her music and art and writing and donate to a local charity in some way. Then we collect the names of people and who did what and bundle it up in a great card for her. Andrea (Flare) is the artisitic director and she is amazingly crafty so in the end this thing always looks wonderful!

The card did indeed turn out to be amazing. We ended up getting a few more last minute donations yesterday (literally as we were putting in the names I was running to do a second printing) which bought our total to 29 people. Not too shabby, not quite as many as last year but it gives us somethig to shoot for next year ;) Andrea designed a great card, it looked just beautiful. My living room looks as though a craft room has exploaded in it, my roomies kittie Zion is loving it! We took pictures of the card which will be posted asap.

Then we had a quick dinner (wonder of wonders I actually ate something before a show, a rarity in itself lol) and got all dressed up again :) Somewhere in the midst of the day I got a call from Tom who was still sick but who felt well enough to make it out *yay* so I had far less ticket stress to worry about.

We got all ready and headed off to the theatre. And who should end up on our streetcar (Viv you'll love this) but Ron Sexsmith! Very random. He accidentally hit Nomi with his shopping bag lol.

On our way into the theatre we checked out the creepy graffitti on the streetcar shelter again to see if it was real spray paint or just that fun stuff you spray in your window at Christmastime... yeah it's permanent and definitely creepy.

We were ridiculously early to the theatre and somehow I managed to not even notice tour posters as we walked in. It could be possible that they weren't there... but I think more likely I was just too excited to be there for night two. We met Milton Girl while we were waiting for everyone and she let us know there were a TON of traffic accidents on the way down to the theatre at which point I started to mildly panic that people we knew would be late again but fortunatly everyone whom I had tickets for made it on time and we managed a quick ticket trade with Jim's friend who bought Tom's ticket :) Much goodness :) Also I noticed the tour posters outside (my picture!!!) and was going to steal them and then decided that no, if they were outside I could just buy them inside so I left well enough alone...

and on to the show...

Tonight's opening act was John Southworth who at first I was completely meh about. But he had some good banter with the audience and while his music isn't something I'd probably listen to a lot I sort of liked a few of the songs. It was like the reverse Tomi Swick effect ;)

During the intermission I ran into Tod and was very excited about the fact he'd made/found more posters. To which I got a very confused look and a "no we didn't." What the thought was is that someone from Warner came over and did a little promotional decorating. Whatever it was I was happy to see the posters and Tod told me to steal them so I went right ahead and did so, and then Andrea went out and stole some more :)

Then the performance of the evening, Miss Sarah Slean.

1. Drive: introduced as one of her favourite songs by The Cars. I thought it was even better than last night, perhaps because I was more used to her version now... whatever the case, it was great last night.

She talked a bit about her gorgous red dress and how her mother told her that she couldn't wear it because she'd worn it on TV, I believe it was her Juno dress last year... Seriously pretty. And then it was off with the shoes again lol. Different shoes tonight, not the ones that made her fall at the Cohen tribute but still, off they came!

2. Out In The Park: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. Much the same as last night, I love love love the strings with this piece.

A quck little bit of chatting with "there's no place like home" thrown in there. Oz reference! I cheered, because I am a geek like that. I figure Oz references are about as close as I'll EVER get to having 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' played for me so I take what I can get ;)

3. California: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. Introduced by saying that she had a lot to say on the subject of infidelity as she'd been a part of it many times. A statement that was quickly amended with "recieving end! recieving end!" This is one of those songs that always makes me sit up and take notice of how Sarah sings, she uses her voice as an instrument (if that makes any sense at all) she's not just out there singing the words but she's doing really interesting melodies and just blending with her piano. Fabulous!

4. Eliot: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. She started this one off with a cute piano intro and then dove right on in. This song has become so much of an audience favourite now and she gets so into it! Very dramatic expressions and all :) Again tonight this was the point in the concert that it just looked like Sarah had settled in and started to have fun with it :)

5. So Many Miles: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. I want this song on an album, I want to listen to it every day! It is a song I can feel lifting me! I would love to see this one get released as a single. Naturally I'm hoping that it makes it's way onto the new album. Currently I've heard it being very well recieved from pretty much every tour stop along the way so that's a good sign :)

6. My Invitation: The song Yen has waited ages to hear live! A wonderful rare treat of a song. I adore hearing it :)

7. Sweet Ones: Ahhh the audience favourite. I'll leave my usual comments aside and just say that someone in the third row behind me had a BEAUTIFUL voice when singing along. I'm always very quiet when I sing along because I cannot sing well at all, it was good to be surrounded by talent :)

There almost was a wardrobe malfunction after this song but all was well lol and it led to being told a more detailed version of the Leonard Cohen tribute show falling on stage story. Poor Sarah, I'm glad to see her joking about that now :)

8. I'm Your Man: This is the second song she played at that tribute and fell after. I loved hearing it again and not being distracted from the song at the end :) I also REALLY loved hearing her back it up with her own piano playing. Much more enjoyable :)

9. Looking For Someone: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. The sad song written in C major. She did a fabulous job with that task and I cannot say enough how much I love this song, and love it even more with the strings. What I did not love was the person who had their cell phone on which rang right at the end of the song in a quiet moment. Gah, who even does that anymore?!

A quick bout of 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' was played to illustrate the happyness of C major I belive.

10. Paris Swan: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. She introduced this one saying that in Canada we smile a lot because when she was in France she found that she was smiling by reflex at people (as one does) and they were all somewhat weirded out by the smiling English lady LOL Clearly Dell and I would be sunk if we ever end up in Paris we are some of the smiliest people I know when we get started lol Anyways, this song is so going to be a crowd favourite, it's catchy and quirky and I love it (clearly that's the bar for a good song ;) ) It's another one that is full of many theatrical expressions from Sarah as she plays. Much fun :)

Before Sarah started her next song she said that last night her Dad had been in the audience and surprisingly hadn't had anything to say about her new little song (Paris Swan) as usually he'll point out that the lyrics were way too complicated which is what he had said about...

11. Lucky Me: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. Again with the standing and dancing and acting and just so much fun! I did rememeber the "declined" but that was more due to the fact that I was reminding myself to remember because I was just as sucked in tonight as I was last night.

We introduce the Blue Spruce Quartet:

Karen Graves - first violin
Kathryn Sugden - violin
Alex Grant - cello
Anna Redekop - violo

(as always thanks to last year's annoymous commenter who helped me with the spelling of their names.)

12. Weight: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. Apparently another change in the order of the songs lol. Again this one was sung away from the piano and was just full of life and fun.

As Sarah sat down at the piano she played a little chord and dubbed it the "Good Witch chord" and then was looking to the sky for Glinda to make an entrance lol. Actually she looked straight to where Glinda comes on stage for the first time in Wicked which led me to wonder if she didn't get to see Wicked while she was in town this week... two Oz references in one show make me very pleased though ;)

13. Pilgrim: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. I had a little jaw dropping moment during this song, it is amazing live, simply amazing.

Encore the First

14. Duncan: *Hurray* for Duncan two nights in a row. This was the first song of hers that I heard that just grabbed my heart and wouldn't let go. Honestly I think this may have been the reason that I decided to just hop a bus during the Day One tour, head into TO in the midst of my exams, meet a bunch of random Passioneers at some random guy's office (so the stuff of internet horror stories but it turned out better than alright) and see the show. Powerful little song. Although there was another missed note in it tonight, at a different place lol. No idea what's going on with this one. It wasn't as noticible tonight but Sarah made a face as soon as she hit the wrong note, oops.

Randomly, there was some beautiful lighting done at these shows. Very simple and lovely. I wish pictures had been allowed so that people could have captured some of those moments. Even if they made a "no flash photography" rule that would be great, most people don't need a flash anyways, you can even buy disposable cameras with 800 speed film which usually can do a pretty decent job sans flash.

15. When Another Midnight: Played with the Blue Spruce Quartet. This one is another one that is now being sung away from the piano. It's one of my favourites and I was overjoyed to hear Sarah once again sing the operatic part during the song. Last year I fell in love with the string arrangement that is played at that point and so to get to hear that again AND Sarah singing like that, just wow.

16. Wake Up: Again played with just two Blue Spruces but tonight the others stayed on stage as well. This song is so sweet and beautiful and it's always just such a great feeling when the whole audience starts singing along, you just can float on that.

Encore the Second

17. Your Wish Is My Wish: Played solo. Sarah came out and said she had one more in her, and I think that this was a great one to have left :) Very beautiful song that we haven't heard live in quite a while I don't think.

So the night ended a few songs earlier than last night but it was still an amazing amazing show. Oddly no requests were taken, but the setlist was great so it's all good.

We headed out to the lobby which was a madhouse! The plan was to hop in line and do the card while people were still around, advertising for next year and all that jazz. BUT the line was just a mob of people when we got out there so I took one look and was like "nope, not happening so much" and set about to get the tape off of my tour posters so that one could be signed. I got a couple extra as presents and we gave one to Wendy as well :) And then we waited and waited and waited. I picked out doubles of the last two art prints that I didn't have doubles of so I can add them to my office decor on Tuesday :)

I gave out some Christmas/holiday presents of fudge to people (Sorry for the people whom I missed, there is only so much baking I can do lol, everyone else, be kind and share ;) ) I gave some to Michael as a thank you for replying so quickly to my email this year. He'd helped me out with the Hfront ticket problem, gave a little advice, I appreaciate it :)

We also gave Tod some fudge and a card as a thank you for all that he does to make sure the shows go on. I can remember last year when we gave him a card and it was the first time he actually seemed happy to see us LOL now I think he's gotten used to the Passioneers who are always around. We were talking to him about the creepy graffitti (and I may have thrown the abridge Harbourfront rant in there... I can't help it, as much as the management there was kind there are still a LOT of problems with their general staff and as those are the people who interact with the public the most, that means there is a problem.) It was actually very sweet to watch him being very protective of Sarah when people were up there getting their pictures taken with her, Tod is watching where you're putting your hands guys so behave! LOL Actually the crowd of people waiting to see Sarah has grown a lot in the last year so it must start to get sort of scary when suddenly there are so many people and they want to hug you and take pictures with you and there really isn't a huge amount of security there. Fortunatly I've found most Slean fans to be great people who are REALLY respectful. I like that :)

After waiting for the line to disappear we were chatting and totally didn't notice the line was gone, oops. But Sarah came over and Andrea and I presented her with the card. It was definitely a little more expected this year but Sara was so pleased with it. She was reading through everyone's donations and saying people were just reading her mind. So congratulations to everyone who participated this year, you did a wonderful job! I will get pictures uploaded soon, this year a few people were snapping pictures and there are going to be some good ones I think. I just have to resize the ones Dell took for me (thank you Dell you did a GREAT job!)

Then I was a big nerd and had much stuff signed. The tour poster is made out to me, again with the giant 'z' in my name now LOL I like it! Sarah says it's now going to be her new thing for me LOL. I also had her sign my copy of Black Widow and my CD insert on my picture. Yes, clearly I did need that cd signed twice ;) Everyone got things signed, my new silver sharpie almost was stolen by Sarah lol. I was going to let it just walk off with her but it was so handy to have it to get dark things signed so I had to ask for that back.

And that's it for the evening, we did a quick Passioneer group photo for fun again this year. My copies of that are a little fuzzy but there were 3 cameras so I know there are good ones around and I think I can photoshop mine to be a little neater...

As usual after the second night no one really wanted to leave so we walked and chatted and chatted and chatted and then sort of split and then chatted some more lol and then Cam, Nomi, Andrea and myself decided that we were starving so we picked up a pizza and took it back to my and Nomi's apartment to eat :) Very good idea, I so needed food, I honestly can't remember eating much at all yesterday (oops) I got too distracted with all that I had to do. I also managed to pull out some of my old narcolepsy that I used to have in second year and I totally was curled up and passed out for about 30 minutes. Then I woke up, we chatted more and then around 2 Cam was off and we all went to bed. I was up at just before 7 today, so clearly still not enough sleep but I was itching to write up my review so perhaps that was what made me get up.

If anyone has made it through this entire review, congratualtions and fudge are due to you! Thanks for reading, let's do this again next year shall we?
