A mass hysteria happened in my school for 3 weeks 2 years back, so I just wanted to type it out for you to read.
*please keep in mind that this has a lot of references to old Malaysian culture and Islamic culture.
It happened a day after a group of 50-something students who came back from a week camping trip. It was just a normal morning, and school ended normally. While I was packing my stuff, I noticed a weird tension in the atmosphere. I made my way out of the school, and from inside the school bus, I saw the teachers looking out the window from the office. I looked around the school compound, but saw nothing.
The next day, I found out that a girl went hysterical when she went in the teacher's office yesterday. Students said that her eyes were looking around like she's seeing so many things, and she kept on calling for her grandfather. Occasionally, a rumor went around that the girl had a 'guardian' with her. In my country, keeping entities as a 'family guardian' was practiced in the old ages (but it was considered blasphemous for using genies and demons as protectors instead of finding protection from God instead), and they are nicknamed as a 'saka'.
Anyway, as days passed, sightings of a black figure was frequent, and medium students reported to teachers that they should investigate it because they sensed it was nasty. One morning, the principal asked a religious scholar (or an 'ustaz'/'teacher' in Islamic Arabian) to conduct a mass prayer session in the morning. All the Muslims were gathered in the open-assembly ground, and the non-Muslims gathered in another room.
After the session, everyone went back in their classes, but the teachers did not enter at all, so it was noisy. I noticed that the air outside my class got smoky and hazy. I recalled my late-grandmother telling me that when a prayer is done, demons will burn and you might even smell them burning.
After recess, things got worse. Students fainting and seeing things, and hysteria broke out in the school. Everyone was told to go into our classes, and prefects had to make sure all hallways are empty. I heard from other students that the girl with her 'saka' was the reason all this happened. It is said that she joined the recent camping trip, and while they were camping, she bad-mouthed the old forest. She had a bad fever for the whole week then, and when it was time for everyone to go back home, she and her friends bad-mouthed the forest again. Of course, it's believed that forests or any old areas have entities or spirits that made a home there. Everyone guessed that the forest spirit followed her home out of anger, and spooked the lights out of her.
Others also said that her 'saka' guardian tried to protect her when the spirits spooked her, and rumors is that the 'saka' came from her grandfather's family line, so that's why she kept on calling out for her grandfather.
Anyway, we went out of school later than the usual schedule out of teachers' concern. We kept on having prayer sessions every morning with the Islamic scholar man. A friend of mine said that she heard the scholar saying that whatever followed the camp students back into the school wants the school grounds to itself. But, since the school already has its own entity, both of them are fighting over property. I recall hearing stories about my school's own entity who is in the shape of a man in worker's overalls, but s/he is a nice one (the medium students confirmed it). A lot of students 'rooted' for the school entity to help protect our school from the nasty one.
And then, the scholar man made an announcement. He said that he and his other scholar friends will conduct a cleansing ritual in the school area soon. He said that the bad spirit said that if they want it to go away, it will only if the same bus and same students came along as how it followed them back to the town. The scholar also said that if there are any students who felt 'disturbed by it' can come to him for a cleansing ritual too.
That night, when I was in my room going to bed, I thought I heard dogs howling wildly.
The next day, the whole school was scattered with pepper and salt. The teacher told us to not clean our classes for three days. Thankfully, the cleansing worked, and the forest spirit was sent back to its original place. Weird thing is that it wasn't just one spirit, but 100+ spirits! I couldn't believe at first. Some students said that the days we did the prayer sessions destroyed most of them demonic spirits (that explains the smoke and haze), and that the stronger ones were finished off by the religious scholar and his crew.
The girl with the 'saka' guardian left the school, and things became peaceful again.
I have to say, it was quite an amazing experience for me. Even though I didn't feel or see anything, but from the atmosphere, it was frightening. A lot of students came to dislike the girl and her triplet siblings, since they have been infamous for being trouble-makers a lot for the past few years.
