Day 3: Is there any of the films adaptations that have made you angry because they’ve ignored important parts of the book?
Well, funny enough, as much as I adored and loved The Half-Blood Prince, there were parts that I thought were important that they didn't really touch upon. Some of the memories , for example, were left out and I thought that pretty much all of them had something important to say about Voldemort's psyche: his unexplained hatred of Muggles, his impulse to collect things of value, his rigid independence, the thirst for immortality...all of it is explained in the memories, and each of them are important for understanding Voldemort (and is the main reason why I found the book The Half-Blood Prince so fascinating). But then again, this is me, who loves detailed characters who have many layers to them. I hate stealing from Shrek, but it's true: people are like onions; they have layers to them, and it's fairly obvious that Tom Riddle wasn't born evil, so why not show all of the things that made him choose to be evil? *shrugs*
Also, having Snape reveal at the very end of the movie that he is, in fact, The Half-Blood Prince and then not explain why and how was VERY anti-climatic if ask me. I know that they didn't go really far into it in the book, but at least they went farther with it than they did in the movie!
Anyway, I had a fun day with Lydia yesterday! We watched the entire first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I completely remembered why I love that show. I loved it when it first came out in like...2005, I'm guessing? It's not that I lost interest in thw show, but somehow, I would always forget when it was on and I would miss it, so I didn't bother trying to keep up.
But I always loved, loved the show. I'm a self-confessed lover of all things about European and American history, and I think everyone here knows that. But there's always been a part of me that has been fascinated with places like India, China, and Japan. Mostly, I'm impressed with their religions like Buddhism and Shinto and their codes of behavior, such as Confucianism. The emphasis they put on being in balance with themselves and with nature I think is very inspiring, and interesting. So, a show about people being able to manipulate the four elements who also have a sense spirituality was definitely going to appeal to me.
And even more importantly, I absolutely adored the characters! My favorites are mostly boys: Ang, Sokka, Uncle Iroh, and my definite favorite, Prince Zuko (I have a legit crush on that guy). I'm not too fond of Katara; personally, I think she gets a little annoying (but the episode where she shows up that sexist water-bending master? EPIC!). But I do love Toph and Suki.
Anyway, TONIGHT'S THE VERY POTTER SEQUEL PARTY AT MADDIE'S HOUSE!!!! I'M EXCITED, ARE YOU?
