Feedback Friday: The Belated Return

Feb 14, 2009 04:01

I wanted to use my turn on crack_van to recommend one of dearratboy AKA drworm's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. vids, but others beat me to all of them -- the nerve! So, I'll just have to use my belated return to Feedback Friday to finally thank the infamous co-founder of Thrushies for his highly addictive vids.

Dr. Worm, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying about the Bomb and Love The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

1. The Shadow Government (Protest Song for Drug Dealers):

I love the ambiguity that pervades this highly entertaining vid. It's a dead-on portrayal of the shadowy world of U.N.C.L.E. agents, snatching Innocents off the street and lurking behind filing cabinets. However, the often thoroughly pummeled agents (especially poor Illya) could easily be seen as the victims of this very same government. Or they could even be in need of a Big Brother to protect them from all of the shady characters out to get them. Regardless, there is no ambiguity about how much fun this vid is to watch, and it always leaves me with warm feelings of affection for the the insanity of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. universe.

2. Spies in the House (of Love):

I normally don't enjoy crossover vids, but this one didn't leave me twiddling my thumbs waiting for the characters I recognized to appear. Instead, the smooth, seamless parallels made between The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and the original Mission: Impossible left me intrigued about M.I., a show that had previously left me cold. This vid is a wonderful tribute to the sensuality that imbued 1960s spy shows, and a delightful reminder of the freedom TV characters once had to show genuine affection for each other, regardless of gender.

3. Slow Hands (Killer for Hire):

This is one of my all-time favourite The Man from U.N.C.L.E. vids, and I'm too embarrassed to confess how many times I've watched it. In my opinion, this vid embodies the strengths of the previous ones, and builds on them. There's the unorthodox selection of song and clips from the show that are merged together with perfect timing. This vid also has the same marvelous balance of action and tongue-in-cheek humour that the T.V. show did. The slowing and reversal of time was a wonderful addition that enhanced the surreal nature of a Dr. Worm vid. Finally, Slow Hands is a joyous celebration of the delicious chemistry between the two leads. If I tried to list all of my favourite parts, I'd end up describing the entire length of this vid.

I also owe a long overdue thank you for the commentary on the truly terrible The Man from U.N.C.L.E. comics. This was a hilarious public service that I greatly appreciated. I just wish I could come up with a plot bunny to do full justice to Napoleon the fearsome spider killer, co-starring Illya as the little puppy who could (shoot anything that moves).

Dr. Worm, it's a joy to have you in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. fandom, and I hope you're having enough fun to stick around.
