So y'all might have heard about the recent Ms Magazine/blog article,
"How I Picked 10 Best Feminist Teen Books of All Time" (which is getting some criticism from a lot of YA authors/readers). I'm not going to comment further on *that,* but I did want to take the opportunity to mention a brilliant and serious site devoted to celebrating feminist literature for young people, the marvelous
Amelia Bloomer Project (Full disclosure: A Curse Dark as Gold was an Amelia Bloomer book for 2009.)
The ABP website cites its selection criteria as follows:
1. Significant feminist content
2. Excellence in writing
3. Appealing format
4. Age appropriateness for young readers
...And goes on to discuss those criteria in depth. It's fascinating reading--very thoughtful, thorough, and responsible, with one clear, simple, overriding theme: "Feminism is the belief that women should be equal to men."
And the list has included titles like Graceling, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, Wintergirls, and The Secret Keeper.
No ghettos here, people. :)
