Well, I've finally officially graduated from college, applied to grad school, and moved out of my apartment, which has taken up most of my attention over the last few months, with Christmas (which was terrible). I hope that I'll have a little time for something beyond tumblr (fun, now that I have Missing E and Tumblr Savior, but I think I've had actual conversations with like three people). I did carve out the time for Yuletide, though, so - belated reveal?
To Live Forever (2788 words) by
anghraineChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
the Belgariad/Malloreon (surprise!)
Rating: General
Warning: N/A
Relationships: implied canon, I guess
Characters: OC POV character, Mara, (Princess) Beldaran, one of Polgara's twins, Belgarath
Summary: A Melcene scholar looks for answers.
I was really nervous about using an OC, even as mostly a vehicle for Here's The World Awhile Later, and Things That Happened - I really wanted the outsider POV pseudo-academic thing and had a very forgiving prompt, but it was still a bit nerve-wracking. (Especially when I decided to make her an Angarak at the last minute.) It was also kind of scattered, since I wanted to sum up 'what happened later' and 'tour of the world' and address the implication of the sorcerers' continued immortality in a now-changeable world, taking into account the late references to sorcery occurring naturally in people, unrelated to discipleship - it's just that most of them get zapped by the universe. And I wanted to stay away from 'immortality is horrifically awful' - that's not the leaning of the books at all - or 'immortality is sunshine and flowers yay.' It's more compressed than I'd have liked, but my recip seemed to have liked it, and I got nice comments, so all-in-all, I'm pretty happy.
I also really enjoyed the, idk, incidental references, with Mara the master babysitter (you know he would), Senji fulfilling Garion's prophecy by becoming a disciple of Eriond, the empress after Cyradis having a significant Dryad/Borune name, Beldaran ending up a sorceress with one of Polgara's twins, while the other is conspicuously absent (a/n: that means dead). Though talking about Zakath's funeral (and Garion withdrawing shortly thereafter) made me sulk at myself for an hour. (Totally my Eddings brotp. Or maybe just OTP.)
Also, I read Belgarath, Polgara, the entire Belgariad, and about half the Malloreon in a week as I was plotting, and I've been meaning to talk about those apart from the fic. Maybe later! I'm a bit sad that there isn't much of a fandom - I think there would be if they'd been a hit now instead of when they were, or if there were some kind of (sadly unlikely!) adaptation. So engaging and troperrific and so many awesome ladies, and yet so very, very flawed. Polgara, whyyyy, I only want to love you. There could be some awesome meta and fic. And shipping wars. Alas :(
