Padmé's death convinced him that, if the Emperor's favourite cousin who was also a powerful Imperial Senator could be killed, no way was the galaxy safe for a two-year-old boy. So it was the last straw, but it wasn't 'for' her in the way it was in canon, or the way it is w/ Leia in ROTJ.
Writing the backstory did rather make me want to write a ROTJ-compliant version -- I really liked writing Anakin and Padmé together. I think it shows that Luke has the ability to become like Vader, but also that Vader has the ability to be like Luke
*glee* This is exactly what I did want to get across! The affinity isn't one-way. And Luke really has to weigh the risk of his becoming more like his father against the benefits of his father becoming more like him -- is a dangerous Luke worth a non-murderous Vader?
