The Robin Hood Foundation, a charity aimed at alleviating poverty (and funding disaster relief) in the New York City area -- you can read what wikipedia has to say about them
here and what they say about themselves
here -- has come up with a really cute idea for raising money to put roofs over the heads of homeless families this holiday season.
Check out
Gingerbread BNB.
You book a virtual stay in one of three gingerbread houses, and 100% of the money goes to sheltering homeless families. Every $100 (USD, I presume) gives one family a home for the night, but the options are tailored to how much you can afford to give. The Cozy Camper is $5 a night, the Rustic Cabin is $10 a night, and the Modern Home is $20 a night, and you choose how many nights your stay will be. The descriptions are cute and funny, and if you donate (which you can also do as a gift for someone), you get a postcard of your virtual stay and the warm fuzzy feeling of helping contribute to help people in need.
This is a great hook for a charity fund drive, and I hope more such charities follow Robin Hood's path of this kind of appealing innovation.
