The Shrine

Oh, everybody. *enfolds entire show in love*

The effects in this were lovely. The team stranded atop the stargate as it glows eerily from underneath a sea of ice water that wasn't there some six hours before, that was beautiful. The waterfall around the shrine was lovely. The pan up and around Atlantis after John's spittake was just -- I could say it served to accentuate the enormity of everything being lost, or the futility of living in this wondrous city and not being able to fight this.

Of course, that whole scene, I loved. I love how everyone dealt or didn't, reacted, emoted -- we see Zelenka for maybe a second, he's obviously just come from the jumper bay, his head is bowed and he walks so quickly away. I bet he'd just said goodbye, obsessively checking the jumper for Rodney's one last flight. I bet he didn't want anyone to see his face. One second of screen time, and I get all that. That's some damned fine acting.

I think Teyla's the only one who goes to the shrine we never see with tears in her eyes, but I'll have to watch it again a few more times to be absolutely sure. "I owe him," Ronon said, and ambushed Jeannie to tell her of this one last chance. And John -- he really will do anything for his team. Anything except give up. Assist in brain surgery. It was a little creepy how much is day 18 bedside smiling "hey buddy" made him look like Evil Nightmare Doppleganger John, but that's probably because, as much as he was crinkling his eyes to make the smile seem as genuine as possible, there was still pain. And that also takes a hell of a lot of acting skill.

And I bet he will never, ever forgive himself for going to bed and leaving Rodney to wake up alone. God, that killed me, Rodney running down the hall to John's room, screaming his name, pounding on his door because he was so terrified he'd die all alone.

With all the cast and crew who were saying this was a great episode, a good one, a powerful one -- they were right. They were so right. Is it possible to wear out a DVD? Because I have the feeling that, when this season comes out, there will be a lot of people finding out. I hope to be one of them.
