Everyone has heard the phrase “vengeance is dish best serve cold”. In Hamlet, vengeance is the source of tragedy. Hamlet is a prince whose father dies and his father’s ghost comes to visit him. The ghost says that he has been murdered by means of poison by the betraying brother. Hamlet was quite upset naturally and concocted a brilliant plan. Hamlet acted insane in order to get the lay of the land and see if the ghost was telling the truth in that his uncle was a murderer. He plotted, planned, and schemed. He found out His uncle was a murderer and at a pivotal moment he had his uncle alone, but he didn’t kill him. He really should have killed him then, it would have saved so much tragedy, but what he wanted was vengeance not justice. His uncle looked like he was praying and theoretically if he died while praying he would go to heaven. Hamlet wanted him to go to hell not heaven.
Justice is punishment for wrongs committed. Justice is equal in magnitude and does not look for suffering just balance. Justice is all about balance. Committing a crime tips the scales and then a just punishment balances the scales back.
Vengeance is all about suffering. It is about making someone pay. It is usually about utter destruction and misery forever if it can be managed. To want vengeance is to hate.
Hamlet’s hatred for his uncle is what led to the tragedy, if he had let God worry about the afterlife and had just worried about his kingdom then things would have worked out. He was only thinking about his hatred and that was his doom.
