The Angst of Youth

Apr 23, 2007 03:22

Wow - irregular like menopause. I am currently filled with a slight bit of frustration mixed with a tiny bit of youthful angst. Why? Because I am disgusted with the approach to the most recent loss of a significant amount of innocent lives on American soil (does not include loss of innocent lives off of American soil - covered later).

In my insomniatic (not a word) discognicense (also not a word) I have decided to approach the Virginia Tech shootings. People need to understand that the lesson that should be learned from this is not that we need to feel less safe as a society and to combat this we need to take more incidental precautions to prevent it. These preventative measures generally include: metal detectors, security guards, drug/bomb dogs. While these may be effective at fighting the result it does not at all attack the cause of this problem. Preventative care however, can dissemble the quagmire which plagues the minds of our political bodies currently.

Why placate a problem with drugs or condemn it which will leave it to fester and grow. Why? Because its easier than approaching the problem of ostracism. More needs to be done to recognize these problems rather than stifling everyone in a generally comfortable environment. There was a professor that noticed Seung Cho's disturbing rage pooling inside and even brought it to the attention of the autorities but nothing was done because the threat wasn't direct. So, instead of confronting a possible problem with compassion - it was approached with calous ignorace and now remorseful regret.

To look back to gain insight is an integral part, I beleieve, to growth and improvement. This is why I have no faith in our president. I love this country and its values and everything it stood for but I have lost faith in our democratic process and the dignity we once had. Our country has a great capacity for grieving in times of pain and if that was ever once extended to the incredible and lamentable loss of life in Iraq, we would not still be in this war. I am always awestruck when I hear the daily statistics, sickened by the sheer number of dead and injured, and further befuddled by the lack of compassion these headlines draw. I have been vehemently opposed to this war from the inception and am still wondering how we have not IMPEACHED.

Bullshit...no time table, longer commitments for troops, NO RULES, WTF? As a friend of a marine I cannot take the constant worry that he will be killed in the line of duty for false war. So when are we leaving? At least not for a year and a half or until our congress reflects the opinion of our nation, plenty of other nations, grows some balls and IMPEACHES.

So I want to nip it in the bud. Before our president or any other distressed youth kills anyone. Preventative care is the answer and as always...the sooner the better.
