Kenneally's birthday party on Saturday night went beautifully. It was a reading night/salon/dead poets type affair. We had sushi and watched most of Batman Returns, and then down went the lights and out came the candles and vodka, and everybody read one or two things. The people there were varied, and the readings were varied. A Shakespeare sonnet and an excerpt from Scent Of A Woman, HG Wells and The Life Of Pi, quaint epitaphs and an Appalachian folk song, WH Auden and Twin Peaks. I read Poe's 'A Dream Within A Dream' and a short funny story about a dolphin tattoo by a fellow I met in Seattle.
Then, last night, it was Arielle's birthday party at Cafe Murano. Low-key and fun. Some gossip and much geekery. Cheesecake and pear tart. We listened to Moulin Rouge and the London Philharmonic performing video game soundtracks. There were many good conversations, and several debates solved by the internet. Another success.
[Oh my lord, I can't wait until Friday night. Can't I be put into an artificial sleep until Friday night?]
So! I've lost an inch around my waist and hips, and two inches around my arms. I'm reasonably proud of myself and certainly intend to keep this trend going, now that I have proof that discipline and exercise actually amount to something. I treated myself to 4 pairs of my favorite lace boyshorts to celebrate. ^_^
Right now I am watching Mister Arkadin, an Orson Welles film that Patrick lent me. I can't really keep my attention on it, though; I'm sad to say it isn't very good.
In the last two days I read Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, and that is good, so very very good. It's been sitting in my pile of secondhand sci-fi paperbacks I bought last year, and once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. So, time for a Bradbury kick. I'd only read The Martian Chronicles and part of The Illustrated Man before. Fahrenheit 451 is next, I should think.
Oh, also - our shipment from Alivan's came in so now Melissa and I have House ties and wands. [We got wands from the $20 'Finneas' Choice' grab-bag, so we won't know what the wands look like til Friday when we see each other and choose which box we want.]
