Tip of the week

I am subscribed to a few listservs and this tip came up and thought it was interesting enough to post.

Are you looking for story starters or prompts? Try filling a recipe box with index cards full of your own homemade prompts. Spend some time sitting in front of the television or listening to the radio, and jot words and phrases onto the cards. Some examples using this method include, "debris was spread out all over the street," or "suddenly a song, barely noticed before, became an anthem," and "it was fifty years after his death, and yet." The sources are endless and surprising, from music to the news. An important key is not to think too much as you are writing down snippets from the world around you. Don't worry if the prompt is any good. You'll be surprised how many are excellent. Then, when you need a prompt, pull a card out at random and start writing.

Something else to generate ideas for my idea file!
