After carrying me nearly 4000 miles in the past few weeks, Shiva's electrical system decided to start flaking out on the way back from Omaha to Chicago on Friday. There was a whining belt, the battery light came on (and went off, and came on, and went off), and we decided to stop in Des Moines to see if we could get some service

As an FYI, the alternator is what keeps your battery constantly charged. You can drive without one during the day if you don't have to use your lights, but driving at night is an absolute no-no as you'll burn through the charge in your battery very quickly.

So you'll likely need either a jump or a full battery charge in addition to a new alternator.
