This got long. I remember this - this scrambling to just cover the main things I saw, and never having time to really delve down... But here it is - most quotes from memory as I've not had time to transcribe properly, sorry.
Oh, I hadn't thought about River as the gunslinger. It did occur to me that her story might be hinted at, but I was looking for her in the little girl whose (frankly terrifying) angel fell from the sky, and also thinking of how Amy must be remembering killing Kovarian when she was insisting on mercy for Jex.
Is that "The First Question" picture fanart, or a real promo?

but I was looking for her in the little girl whose (frankly terrifying) angel fell from the sky Oh totally. Think I was going to put that in there, but decided to leave it for another post.
and also thinking of how Amy must be remembering killing Kovarian when she was insisting on mercy for Jex. Mmmmm. So many mirrors...
Is that "The First Question" picture fanart, or a real promo? I'm not sure, I snagged it from a_phoenixdragon.
But this time... This time it was someone saying the very worst thing possible...
There's also the fact that Jex has got to be reminding the Doctor of Davros. I mean, war that was laying waste to the planet, scientist creates killer half-machine things, scientist (upon realizing there's a figurative gun pointed at his head) attempts to ensnare the Doctor using words-reminding me quite a bit of "Resurrection of the Daleks," in which the Doctor had Davros at gunpoint, but didn't shoot.
One thing you don't want to do with a slightly unstable Doctor is to accuse him of not doing what's necessary to save people. But the other thing is to remind him of Davros, of the pain he (possibly) could have stopped if he'd just been ruthless enough. Jex managed to do both. In a sentence.
He's really ridiculously lucky to have survived that.

Jex managed to do both. In a sentence. IT'S SUCH A GOOD EPISODE!!!
He's really ridiculously lucky to have survived that. Well he didn't survive for long, but yes - the Oncoming Storm was a whisper from completely wiping him out.
Oh, you have so many good thoughts. I too was fascinated by everything about the Doctor in this episode and you've articulated a lot of my feelings, ESPECIALLY regarding his deferring to Amy. (Aside: AMY LOVE \o/.) Their face-off was easily the best scene, IMO. And it makes me very very curious and somewhat dreading of what will happen once she eventually leaves. :\
