Too many thoughts, too little time. ( Lots of rambling under cut )

Well more or less the first thing he says to the team is that he came back 'for you' looking straight at Ianto, so as a head-over-heels Jack/Ianto shipper I would definitely say he'd always intended to ask Ianto out!
Yes, I'm inclined to agree. It's just that the scene with Gwen is so strange. I've thought of two other explanations however: 1) Jack knows that she loves him, and realises how difficult it is for her, but can't do anything about it. 2) Her engagement highlights the fact that he *can't* have a 'normal' relationship with wife & children, because he won't age. (Same problem as The Doctor etc.)

I had forgotten all about that scene in Jack's ship when he thinks he's going to die - thanks so much for that, it is a brilliant contrast.
My pleasure. And I love that scene - it highlights both his bravery, but also the fact that he really has no one, and probably (like John) finds life pretty meaningless on the whole.

I think one of the greatest weaknesses of S1 was that they didn't explain why Jack was miserable.
*nods a lot* (It's the same problem I have with s8 Buffy.) I'd really like to re-watch it too, to be honest. Will have to look out for it when they do a re-run.

My first guess was that Grey is Jack's son or daughter - the hand looked small to me, and bear in mind Jack was pregnant once.
A child is certainly possible. But when was Jack pregnant?

And I'm glad you liked my meta :o)
Very sorry I didn't comment, but I read in the space of about 2 minutes and then had to run away again. But it was v. interesting!
