Belly of the Beast?

peasant_ is a genius! I was thinking about all the food metaphors in 'Unleashed' in yesterday's post, and specifically how often drinking/eating blood comes up in S5. And of course these echoed lines about being eaten:

LILAH: People don't need an unyielding champion. They need a man who knows the value of compromise and how to beat the system from inside ( Read more... )

I agree, but I would like to take the argument a step further. Angel's comsumption of the Senior Partners is a metaphor for embracing who his is, instead of trying to fight his own nature. Angel wins the fight with Hamilton by embracing his vampiric nature, rather than rejecting it. The point of this episode--and arguably, of all the Buffyverse--is to work with what god gave you, rather than trying to be somebody else. Use one's abilities to fight the good fight, and not in the service of evil (i.e. W&H). Remember, this is also the same episode in which Angel signs away the Shanshu prophecy, the long-sought-after reward which will make him "normal again." I don't think that's an accident.

Sorry, that should read "embracing who he is." D'oh.

Oh yes! Definitely. (That was also in the back of my mind, I was just in a hurry.)

Which again ties in with 'Unleashed' interestingly, since that ep. is all about the beast inside. Wow. Not a standalone at all. This just gets better and better! :)

(And damn but Angel is handsome in your icon!)

Ironic that the one thing Angel doesn't get to eat in S5, though, is warm delicious cookie-Buffy. :)

I caught one of the Illyria episodes the other night, but I had to go to bed and couldn't finish watching it. It made me remember how awesome the show was. I have to make some time to rewatch it soon.

I've started a S5 (ATS) re-watch and it's always even better than I remember. *sigh*

I'm zipping by on skip-300 but just wanted to say what an interesting discussion this was and thought the whole consuming metaphor was a nice find.
