The view from across the pond, in case any Americans are wondering how we feel about your Independence Day:

(I.e. couldn't care less, FOOTBALL!)

Re. our new Health Secretary, then this tweet says it well. I just. *hands* Also (from Sky News): COVID-19: Sajid Javid's approach has party support - but scientists are getting worried.

If you need a laugh, let me recommend this: The Saj on CCTV, power stances and smoothies.

But nevermind the football or hurtling towards a 4th wave before we're even halfway through the 3rd.

All the Good Girls Go to Hell
Fandom: Shadow and Bone (Netflix, only 8 episodes!)
Summary: Rough Work if you can get it.
Spoilers: Everything aired so far (S1)

This is a show I don't think I had ever even heard about two months ago, but Promethia has been a very vocal cheerleader, and I can confirm that it's a very rewarding show with some truly amazing characters & many MANY ships. So go forth & watch and then enjoy the vid. Trust me! This was Promethia's initial pitch to me, which covers the basis:

'It's a big, honking fantasy series based on a series of YA novels, though a lot of it you wouldn't specifically peg as YA. Admittedly I do appreciate the general step down in intensity from Game of Thrones-y all!the!sex!and!violence, but overall it's a sophisticated show. The world-building is *chef's kiss* The informing cultural background for the world is imperial Russia rather than the standard medieval England, so everything is just that bit cooler and more unexpected. The core story is a fairly standard orphan finds out they're the chosen one, but you're following several groups of people with storylines that weave around her, and notably I like all of them. Also the protagonist is blessedly non-annoying, so major win.

Most importantly, however, I somehow ship EVERYTHING in this show? Ev.ry.thing. Not burning passion of a thousand suns ship, but like, on any average show I'd be happy enough with one of them. They all push my favorite ship buttons. I never like every ship on a show, let alone actually ship every ship on a show. But the Chosen One protagonist and Mr. Tall, Dark, and Dangerous who is her only true equal? Tricky territory, but I'm somehow here for it this time (they lean hard into the twisted power couple angle). Likewise the protagonist and her too-devoted-to-live childhood best friend who should be major snoresville but somehow they won me over just through sheer determination to stay together and save each other? Yes, why not. The pair of thieves who are so fucking repressed all they can do is glare at each other meaningfully and do unspeakable things for each other before performing elaborate heists? You know I'm all over that shit. The hereditary enemies who end up on an odd couple road trip together? Heck yeah, that's always great, give me it all.'

Elisi's note: Can confirm that it's all good - like, there will be AT LEAST one ship for you - but the thieves are the standouts. I mean, don't YOU want in on a ship where one of them is 'a ruthless criminal mastermind type' and the other one 'moves like a shadow, is literally covered in knives, refuses to kill anybody'? Om nom nom, shipping heaven. ♥ They communicate solely in glares. Oh and the last one in their gang is the most delightfully charming disaster bi who has mad shooting skillz.

Daily Dimash: Tu vas me détruire

This song is from the famous French musical Notre Dame de Paris "The Hunchback" The guy sang about his feelings for Esmeralda. Dimash and Sundet took this song turned it into a duel. It turned out that two guys have the same feelings for the same girl and are ready to fight for her in a duel. Another interpretation is that Dimash is his alter ego and it's an internal conflict. There is an internal battle in the character between giving up his priesthood & chasing the girl he loves (Dimash in liberal pop sound) or staying with the church (Sundet in conservative opera sound). At the end, he ‘kills’ his doubtful self and goes after the girl. Dimash wins.

Background, pieced together from youtube comments:

"It was a Russian opera singer competition Sundet was in and it was either a requirement of the competiton to sing a duet to see how he performs with another artist, or his choice to show his capability singing along with someone and he invited Dimash to perform with him. It seems it was recorded around 2016, for sure before "I am singer 2017". It seems Sundet won the competition. :)

When I found it about 3 years ago it was not available on You Tube, only on the Russian equivalent of You Tube, and heavily "guarded by copyright". Before the song there was a short introduction by the hosts of the program. They said it was a long awaited 'experimental duet' and they compared it to the legendary duets like the duet of Freddy Mercury and Monserrat Caballe, or Luciano Pavarotti and Brian Adams (please note that in 2016 Sundet was already renowned but only some specialists were aware of the existence of Dimash).

I repeat 'it seems' as I collected the comments on this competition from other comments, 'Russian You Tube' was impossible to search for anything. This recording was 'transferred to You Tube' only some one year ago. The introduction was cut off and probably some misalignment of video and music could occur during the process. This is the link to the full recording."
