SLATE: Police Erupt in Violence Nationwide

If those in America wonder what the current protests make me think of (what any uprising makes me think of), it's this song / video from the Green Movement in Iran in 2009. The crowds, the righteous anger, the demands for justice, the police brutality, the fires, even the masks...

I don't think the video is online anymore, but I have uploaded a download for you, in case you are cruious. (WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES OF VIOLENCE.)

My Elementary Schoolmate

The song is from 1979, and was sung again in 2009. Lyrics:

My elementary schoolmate.
You are with me and my comrade all the way.
We’ve suffered together.
Your tears and sighs are mines as well.
Engraved on this blackboard are our names.
Remaining on our bodies are still the scars of the lash of tyranny and injustice.

This uncultured landscape of ours is covered with weed instead of the green of grass.
Either good or bad, dead is the hearts of all its people.
Your hands and my hands must rip these veils apart.
Who else, except for you and I, could cure our wounds?

My elementary schoolmate.
You are with me and my comrade all the way.
We’ve suffered together.
Your tears and sighs are mines as well.
Engraved on this blackboard are our names.
Remaining on our bodies are still the scars of the lash of tyranny and injustice.

This uncultured landscape of ours is covered with weed instead of the green of grass.

My elementary schoolmate.

Racist state violence is not unique to the US.

ETA:

Neil Gaiman: An Acceptance, in rough times
And now, we are all of us living in Interesting Times. The Horsepeople are riding out, as they have ridden so many times before, and the world still needs saving - from plague, from racism, from foolishness and selfishness and pain. It says in Good Omens that we have to save ourselves, because nobody else is going to sort it out for us. And we do. Post has been cloned from dreamwidth. Comments welcome everywhere.
