had to share

My new media obsession is The Great British Bake Off. Which I guess I have to thank shrift for pointing out on tumblr, via this gifset.

I cannot overstate how much I adore this show. To the point of wanting to hang out with the hosts and the judges, and to just HUG EVERYONE. Including the contestants who I think could use a good kick of self confidence. Everyone is just so happy to be there and to be there with everyone else, even when they're flailing.

Plus, it's educational! I've finally gotten around to starting a book eregyrn suggested to me ages ago, Consider the Fork, which is about the history of the tools we use for cooking and eating. I had to describe it to someone over the weekend, and I said it's basically the really cool stories about all the things you never think about. The informational segments on The Great British Bake Off are just like that: neat little dives into the history of a great variety of foodstuffs. The Frenchman who was instrumental to getting gas stoves/ovens into the homes of the general populace. Women selling bagels on the streets of 19th c. London. A short trend of gilding elaborately molded gingerbread in gold leaf.

Anyway, with the focus being finding "the best amateur baker," it's nice that I feel like I could do most anything all the contestants are charged with accomplishing. These are all folks who are home or at university during the week, come out for the competition on the weekend, and practice their recipes on their family, friends, roommates and neighbors, and it doesn't hurt that I've at least tried many of the things they're doing.

But it's even nicer having another competition show where everyone sincerely seems to wish everyone else the best. SYTYCD is the only other where I've gotten that sense. The dancers have that, along with Cat. I think the choreographers could also be thrown in. Even, most of the time, Mary and Nigel. But these days there's so much extraneous stuff around that core of love on that show, that I'm almost having to be reminded of it every week. On The Great British Bake Off, it's as obvious as the food. And that makes me happy.
