Starting oral chemo now but doing more tests on the tissue from the biopsy to
possibly identify some clinical trials she may qualify for. Looking for gene
mutations and androgen factors. So the treatment they are starting with is one
that wouldn't disqualify her for the trials. It is definitely triple negative.
Even though it's rare, it does happen that it changes in 27% of patients. They
want a breast MRI too to be sure there isn't new cancer in her breast. She has
that next week. If she qualifies for the trials it opens up new treatment
options if this one isn't working. They will do a CT scan of liver in 2-3
months to see if liver spots are changing and if worse they will also do a pet
scan to check for other spots. And depending on that and the side effects of the
drug, they will decide to continue this treatment or change to one of many other
options including iv chemo and other pills. Side effects of this are upset
stomach and rash on hands and feet that can both be mild or severe. They will be
increasing the dose slowly. Unless she is allergic which would show as very
severe loose stools and /or multiple sores in the mouth.
