Dear Sophia,
Really? 11? When did that happen? You are almost as tall as me. You look like a teenager. You are smart, and kind and talented and stunningly beautiful. You are sarcastic and funny and strong minded. You are feisty and spirited and a whirlwind of energy and creativity. I am amazed at how you can have so much energy one minute and yet spend hours every day reading and being still. All sprints and rests. Back and forth. Still young enough to need me and want to be held, and yet grown up enough to travel without me and take care of what you need to in day to day life.
I know these years are not supposed to be easy. I hope as you start middle school you are able to take with you all you know about being kind to others, and protecting your heart. I hope you can continue to live with the courage that comes from knowing who you are, and what you stand for. And when you feel weak, which I supposed will happen from time to time, I hope you will continue to find strength in your family. In your brothers who love you so much, and your father and I who will always be here for you, no matter what you need.
I dont know how it is possible that time has gone this quickly, but I know that before we know it you will be a full fledged teenager, and I feel confident that you will come out the other side of this a strong, smart, and independent woman.
Happy Birthday!
Love, Mom
