In Russia? Trying to shut people up?
<>
Why didn't somebody say so sooner? I would have immediately stop muttering curses under my breath (first at myself, assuming it was my own deficiency, then at LJ, for not being able to straighten it out at once) and started cheering. Cheering first for the fact that someone somewhere was posting things that pissed somebody else off enough to try to shut them up. Even the most ignorant speech should be aired, if only to allow the rest of the world to know the contents of some of the smaller, narrower minds out there. And I include in that people who think their version of unknowable things is superior to other people's versions and those who believe that they don't need intensive academic study in order to master science or economics or anything with complicated but as-yet-hypothetical ramifications.
Cheering next for the fact that hacking and silencing and trying to scream louder to drown out voices with whom one does not agree can only work for a little while. Yes, those attacks are inconvenient, especially to those of us not involved in the fight and simply unaware of the reason we cannot log in or stay logged in for days on end. Thank you, LJ, for being there and for working to fix things, not just for we who want to stay in touch around the world but also for those who are fighting wars with words and need this platform to talk and connect and confront and argue and protest and bear witness.
Cheering finally because, even when the technology can be temporarily compromised, this is still an amazing platform and an astonishing network, and I for one feel ridiculously lucky to have it, even (maybe even especially) when it is interrupted.
