He knew all of their names before they arrived because he called them here.
He'd tried to set them on the right path before. He'd failed.
He'd told her to be good, but Kate became a murderer. A thief. A fugitive.
Locke remained tied to his father and was dragged down into the abyss, helpless and drowning in self-pity.
Sun and Jin fell apart. Fell out of love.
Jack was slowly becoming the very man he hated.
Sawyer finished his letter, but it only fueled his hate. It resolved nothing.
He'd never planned on going to Hurley and Sayid, but he needed to. Needed to bring them back. Because he had failed indeed. Most of the people he'd sought to help, to fix, were worse off than before.
Most had become mistakes, but some, at least, were not. Sun and Jin had learned their lesson and repaired their hearts. They were the strongest exception. That is why Sun was kept away. The others would bring Jin back to her, in time. He didn't want to run the risk of sending her back there, to 1977, and having anything change. They were his first victory.
Sawyer, Sawyer learned to love. Little by little. First Kate, then Juliet. He was Jacob's second victory. A small one that could be easily undone, but a victory nonetheless.
Kate had returned to find Claire. A selfless act of a once hopelessly selfish person. Victory number three.
The others...
He rearranges the threads of their lives. Pushes some closer, pulls some apart, cuts some altogether. Eventually it will be set right. Eventually these people will do what they were meant to do. He's tried to set them right twice before - the first visit, the first crash - but maybe third time's a charm.
