Her momma said there weren't no such thing as magic.
"And love ain't nothin' but a con." The saying, which Clementine had come to think of a family one, had finished. "A long, long con." Her mother had all the high hopes and dreams for her that any mother would, save for the standard wish of endless love and a happily ever after.
"I want to want that for you, sweetie, I do, but you need to know the truth about life. You need to know how men are and how they can be. Life ain't no fairytale and damsels in distress need to rescue themselves."
She knows it has to do with her father but she never pressed for details. She'd been painted a picture early on and she felt the sketch was more than enough.
But there was such a thing as magic. Magic existed, and magic flourished. Because one day there'd been a short, awkward platinum-haired boy, covered in paint and clumsy bruises and the next, there was a transformation. A switch, a change, so smooth and so deft that she hadn't seen it happening.
The Aaron Littleton that is standing before her now wasn't the Aaron she'd known. Not Kate's needy son or the annoying teenager, three years her younger. This is Aaron Littleton as a man. Broad shoulders, strong hands, beautiful, confident smile. Still covered in paint and with guitar-calloused fingers to boot, but she has a feeling that he cleans up well.
Her momma might think love's nothing but a con, but Clementine knows better. Love's magic and it's a trick she's fallen for it completely. She doesn't want to know how it works. She just wants to believe in the illusion while it lasts.
