Daniel never meant to fall in love with her.
He never meant to, but he should've known better than that. There are always unforeseeable consequences, repercussions. Different combinations of different variables, chemistries altered and positives and negatives sparking.
Love is an emotion, not scientific fact, no matter what people try to say about hormones and chemical balances in the brain. It can't be controlled in a lab or figured out in an equation. All the factors told him that he needed to keep his heart from interfering. You throw something like that into the mix and there's bound to be a reaction. Perhaps a dangerous one.
Then he saw Charlotte - all fire and ice. Red hair cascading over her ivory shoulders, cool blue gaze deciphering him, decoding him, deciding what value he might have. Her first smile did not reach her eyes.
But eventually, it did. She softened and melted but only for him. A certain result only found in certain circumstances, between two objects. He didn't want to label it attraction. It wasn't what it was.
In the end he knew it was love, but as was constant, that which he loved was destroyed.
Now his only hope is that science can give her back. There has to be a reason that time travel is his expertise. There has to be something he missed.
He'll find it. He'll find her.
He'll save her.
