Maybe Sawyer is right.
Maybe sitting and reading a book, taking his time, is the right course of action.
In the end though, it doesn't much matter. Whatever Sawyer chooses to do, whenever he chooses to do it, it's already done.
Jack had forgotten that. Or maybe he'd just realized it now. He's not sure.
But the past is the past, a story already written. There's no erasing it. There are no butterfly effects, no chances to alter the future.
Ben Linus won't die. Maybe they will, but Ben won't. Ben lives. He lives to torment them in the future, play with their heads, get them back here so the vicious circle is complete.
Kate, in her blind panic, doesn't seem to get that. Neither does Juliet, who rails at him like he's an awful person for not helping a child. Like he's wretched and horrible for coming back here in the first place. And Sawyer, well, Sawyer just thinks he's the same idiot he's always been.
He came back here for a reason. He thought it was to save them, but as Juliet so kindly pointed out, they don't need saving. So he'll just wait until the reason becomes clear. There's no real point in reacting anymore; there's no point at all.
Whatever it is he needs to do, he's already done it, really. Predestination means he can't screw it up.
At least, that's what he's counting on.
