Looking at everything, the sum total of all parts should equal happiness.

This is what Kate decided when she evaluated her new life. The subtraction of Jack from the equation left the columns out of balance, but the positives still outnumbered the negatives.

When Locke returned and attempted to divide her from it all, she turned her back on him. Five words she hated to hear, coming to her again from a different voice, a different name, a different guise.

But then Ben told her that Sawyer was alive. She wanted to ignore the vague promise like she’d ignored everything else; the concept of it as vague and impossible to prove as infinity.

She had no desire to seek reversion to her fractured self. She had no need for variables and unknowns. No theoretical proof; only hard evidence would do.

Yet she knew, deep down, that there was still another step to take. Her answer was not complete. Something was missed, something was dropped.

When she steps back onto the beach, her arms restlessly empty as Claire holds her son once again, Kate realizes that the solution is waiting there for her. He’s as much a frustrating puzzle as ever, but then, so is she.

He pulls her close; they fit together perfectly. He makes her whole, as she does for him.

Perfectly complementary.

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. It only figures that she, in all her stubborn obtuseness, would have to come full circle instead.
