Kate watches the two blonde women talking, once again deep in conversation. They look like family and as Claire hands Aaron over to Juliet's welcoming arms, she can't help but think that they have somehow become one.
Everything has changed. Jack came back and suddenly he and Claire were inseparable. Before, their interactions had been limited to baby check-ups and short talks but now, they are each other's shadow. Charlie had told her why; Kate had quickly discovered that talking to Jack wasn't an option and found other ways to find out what was going on.
Jack may be Aaron's uncle, but it still doesn't explain why Juliet is playing the role of his aunt. Cooing and cuddling, changing diapers and babysitting when Charlie and Claire need a break. Claire seems to trust Juliet implicitly, never mind that Juliet had been party to their captivity. Jack's captivity.
“Why?” Kate had asked her once and Claire looked at her as if she were speaking a foreign language.
“Because Jack trusts her,” was the reply. “He's my brother, Kate.”
“It's that simple?”
“Yes.” It isn't, but Claire doesn't want to explain. She can't. Jack had asked her not to. But she knew, she knew everything. What Kate and Sawyer had done and how Juliet helped Jack escape. How Juliet was the one who had discovered they were related and had brought them together.
Family means loyalty and Jack and Juliet are now her family. She used to think maybe she and Kate could be close, like best friends or sisters. But now Kate is just someone who hurt her family and Claire doesn't want any part of it.
She feels Kate's eyes on her and looks up, meeting her gaze from across the camp. She holds it for a moment, feeling slightly sorry as Kate stands alone, but then looks away, finding Jack walking toward her and Juliet. She smiles as he stops beside them, sitting down next to Juliet and taking Aaron into his arms.
Sister. She's his sister now and she doesn't want to be anyone else's.
