My novel 'Vienna Dolorosa' explores similar events too, living gay under Nazi control. Though it happens one day, when the Nazis took over Austria, the characters in my novel represent all of life under Nazi control, street urchins selling themselves, boys who dress as girls, all dolling themselves up to be pretty just to survive...
'Josef Jaeger' has similar outcast themes and is definitely a book I'm interested in. Those themes and events still fascinate me...
I believe your "Vienna Dolorosa" is like the title, more "painful" than Josef Jaeger. In a way Josef, facing the life like a big stage, shields himself from the reality outside. But yes, you are right, even Josef to survive, in the end play a role where he has to be the pretty boy. Elisa
