Fascinating, Elisa! It's interesting that in the romance genre, you do have to be a woman (in name anyway!) to get far, even now.

And authors like this show that it's not necessarily the case that men can't write romance that women like to read.

And Laura London wrote The Windflower, which I bought a few years back as some of my LJ friends were raving over the slash aspects in it; they were quite right, too! :-)

The Windflower probably it is their most successful book. But I remember also a Silhouette of the '80, where the male character was a stripper... a very original character for that time. Elisa

Yes, is it true. I didn't want to give a feminist taste to the post, but probably there is also a bit of "woman proud" in the reason why male authors chose to write romance under female penname.

One of my mum's favourite authors was Emma Blair, who apparently was a man too.

Excellent post, Elisa! I too, have recently discovered Banis and recently read his Longhorns and The Canals of Mars. There are so many exceptional authors out there in the m/m romance genre, and although lately I've been reading heavily in the gay erotic anthologies, my currently favorite authors are writing the m/m romance.

Victor Banis was a recent discovery for me. The Canals of Mars is very good, and Lola Dances is wonderful. I for sure will read more by him.

Re: William Maltese's comment (Congratulations to him for finaling in the Lambdas!) I saw a health news item some time back reporting on a study of brain waves in men & women (gay and het). The researchers found that gay men's brains process emotion more similarly to the way women's brains do. I'm sure it doesn't apply to every individual to the same degree, but it was interesting--and it might help explain the appeal of m/m romance to women.

Maybe William did and do something without knowing that he probably is thinking more like a woman... I think he is a lot "instinctual" and he doesn't plan something he do it.
